There is an underlying theme that all men here should recognize with her complaints. Any time spent not on her or for her benefit is looked down on as unimpressive. Never mind the fact that he is taking care of food costs and bills, that does not count since providing is only a "Normal responsibility." Since he does not do enough around the house according to her terms, she is not impressed.

This begs the question, how much needs to be done around the house? Prior to this couple living together, he presumably had the place to himself, meaning he would be solely responsible for upkeep for the house. She had to have seen the place before she would have ever moved in and if it was in poor state of order, wouldn't this issue of him not doing enough around the house have been discovered before they were largely confined to their home, and even more so before she moved in with him? Based on the observation of him supposedly not doing enough around the house only taking place when they were staying at home, it does not appear that he was letting the place become disorderly or unclean, but rather that she believes he should contribute more. His contributions paying for everything? They do not count in her eyes, those are just "normal," and therefore not enough.

I cannot say for sure whose idea it was to get a dog, but if she was the primary advocate for getting a dog, it would be unfair to complain that he was not doing enough for "our" dog. I generally do not like making guesses on information that is incomplete, but I will guess that if he was not taking care of things with the dog, he was not ever that keen of having a dog in the first place. We do know for sure that she brought in a child from a different father, since she did not say "our child." If the child is not his by birth or by legal guardianship, where is his obligation to "do more" with her son? He had no part in the existence of her son, but he still provides groceries and bills that directly benefit her son. Given that she had her son prior to the 3 years of their relationship, I would also guess that he is old enough to be able to occupy his time without constant adult supervision. We also do not know the standard for what is "enough" for her. Considering that paying the bills is simply "normal," this would imply she must be expecting that he treat the child like his own son, which is an unfair standard when he is not the father nor legal guardian.

A lesson that we should all understand is that if you are not appreciated for your contributions in a relationship, then it is not a relationship worth having. It was fortunate for this guy that she decided to break up with him, since the lack of appreciation for providing for the household will only get worse over time. Marriage does not change this either, and in fact would more likely make this lack of appreciation worse, as she would expect him to do more while appreciating the increasing burden he takes on less. A never ending battle where you are never good enough is not a battle worth fighting.

She has to be really something to go that far, because whatever your relationship currently is, it's going to take some hits after trying to live together. "Which is the normal responsibility anyway". I had a girlfriend tell me this when she was refusing to do chores around the house I was letting her stay in for free, refusing to get a job, and I refused to buy her any mcdonalds or extras (weed, alcohol etc).

I told her "I pay all the bills so you have a place to live, if you're not contributing anything and I'm having to come home to take care of the house too, then I'm not going to do any more than provide the basic essentials... and even that you should be grateful for, because I don't have to do even that."

Her response was "No, you're my boyfriend it's YOUR JOB to take care of me!". "No, you're adult. It's YOUR job to take care of you. I HELP you take care of you because I care about you, but I don't have to, especially if you're not going to appreciate it."

Cue her saying "Well I do contribute, I have sex with you!" and my response? "Yeah, you enjoy that more than I do. Add that to the other favors I do for you."

She was out to the curb about two months later for consistently fucking up. I hate the mentality that women have, in which they think it's "The boyfriend's JOB" to maintain their financial debts. I keep getting irked about how it seems to have become common place that paying for everything is just baseline, like if you don’t do that you are worthless and should do that because that’s what men are for. Read any AITA post about a dude that works for a living and you will see a slew of comments chiding and always assuming he doesn’t do anything else and that makes him a horrible “partner”. You see, he has a job that pays the bills but she cleans, takes care of the kids, goes grocery shopping, you know the stuff that matters and deserves a damn medal.

All this seems to be pretty simple manipulation to shift value to raising oneself by bring the other down. Nothing to do with making men better.

I wonder how close we are to the tipping point where single men live longer than married men. It's stressful dealing with high expectations that aren't even logical, and knowing that any of your relationships can end at any time over some very arbitrary shit. Women are always holding the relationship hostage. I don't like hostage situations, I want something real.

Women don't know it, but when they always act like that, they devalue relationships significantly. When guys are treated unfairly enough times, it conditions them to just stay out, avoid emotional investment or time investment. We become a little bit passive because we know that our best will never be good enough anyway, so why bother giving it when women are going to dump your ass anyway?
