First off, thank you all. 2.5 years ago I discovered this subreddit and it helped immensely. My question today regards dealing with in-laws.

Background: We had significant problems when we started out (work pulled us on different parts of the country for 1 year, lot of fighting, her parents pushed her towards divorce, almost ended up there). Discovered this sub, implemented, things have improved dramatically, now work in the same city, live together, and I lead...until it comes to in-laws

The situation: Her parents live in the southwest. We live in the northeast. He had a knee replacement. All of us are in medical fields, it's not that big a deal. She went to see him after, going again in a few weeks (totally reasonable), I called a few times to check on his progress. All is fine. I work a lot, make a lot of money (specialized surgeon) so everyone knows exactly what my situation is. Wife also has a high-paying job, but does not work nearly as many hours as I do (50hrs versus 100hrs).

Her mother has been pestering her about why I haven't visited yet, that I don't respect my wife by considering the needs of her family, etc, and that if we had time to go on ski trips (wife tells her everything), we have time to visit them. My wife told me this, I told her that's manipulative behavior, and I do not condone this. If she's unable to handle her, have her call me to discuss it, with intention of clearly establishing boundaries. Instead, wife asked me to call her father to check on him. It had been a few months since we talked, so I agreed. Called him, he's doing fine, etc. He also asked when I was going to visit, and that I need to make time (in a friendly manner). I responded that we live on opposite coasts, I'm a transplant surgeon and time off isn't easy to come by, he knows this. He said make time.

I simply responded we will see, ended the conversation.

I would like to hear how you would have handled the situation, and feedback on the phone call, etc. How would you deal with in-laws like mine? My mother-in-law is extremely manipulative and quite nasty. Father-in-law is her attack dog when she wants him to be, otherwise blue pill. The relationship between them and me is not smooth given the history.

I understand women will always tell everything to their parents, I don't care. I don't want their input or demands to leak into my life. How do I firmly establish these boundaries? Or should I, as I have been doing previously, just ignore them altogether and placate their little fits with empty words ("we will see") and act as I have, leading a great life on the opposite end of the country.
