My standard response -- which isn't close to The Standard Response -- is to state "I am 38 years old and have never been in a settled relationship in my life."

The only downside is that I get stuck doing a lot more comfort game to service the anxiety that inevitably follows from telling a chick that upfront. On the upside, I pretty much never have to do dread game because that statement installs lingering dread as a feature of the relationship from that moment forward.
