Major/minor vs double majoring

Even if you love philosphy, you have to treat it as a hobby. Employers looks at it and might say “that’s neat,” but that’s about it, regardless as a major or minor. If you minored in compsci, that is a little different story.

Prioritize whatever will lead to gainful employment. You should know what this is by now better than most of us.

While philosophy isn't bad, it'll never get you a job, and I doubt a minor in it will make anyone give a shit. Buy a bunch of recommended philosophy books off of amazon and save yourself thousands in student loans. You don't need to takes tests and pay tuition for that, just read that stuff on your own hobby time. Good on the applied math though.

What level are you planning on taking math to? I ask because unlike say, engineering, you'd have to continue your education in mathematics to do anything with it; at least MD. I've seen people drop engineering to major in math only to not have work afterwards. If you were to couple it with computer science and still continue your education, that's a combo I've seen. Philosophy means jack.

If you can finish you major without graduating. Find a part time job, and finish out minor with fewer classes, then do it. You'll still have easy student status, and make money.

I’ve taken a few philosophy classes in my time, and after a certain point taking classes doesn’t actually offer you anything that you can’t do yourself by reading arguments from philosophers and trying to structure their arguments into premises and conclusions. Similar can be said for math, sure, but math is inherently more valuable for a resume than philosophy.

I’d recommend the major/minor pathway and I’d take philosophical logic (if that’s an option) if I were you, as it’s similar in composition to forms of math and the enlightenment achieved from learning it is fantastic.

Double majors rarely matter unless they compliment each other, AND you’re seeking employment in one of those specific majors. Specific majors tend to be overrated in the first place. Washington Post claims only 27% of graduates land a career in their major. Here’s my recommendation, for what it’s worth. Graduate as quick as you can. Major doesn’t matter. Interview like crazy at your university’s career center with potential employers during your last two semesters in fields that interest you. You’ll land something that interests you if you interview with enough companies.

Here some quick and dirty advice: take math kick ass going to STEM. You’ll make a fuck ton of money and you will be happier that you are a couple notches ahead in Maslow‘s hierarchy.

My barista has a philosophy major and now makes a whopping $15/hr, just staying.

Go math, and learn statistics, programming and machine learning. Also, minor in philosophy. The only time that would be useful is if you try to go to law school.

I had a friend in college that did double major in philosophy and comp. science, and guess what is paying the bills? Engineering, and not the mental circle jerk that is philosophy.
