Should I rush and join a fraternity?

Rush if you want, depends on what school you go to though. My school was all Greek so it helped out. Join a fraternity that gets hot girls or you will just sit there for four years resenting your newly acquired loser "brothers" for always scaring away girls. Doesn't have to be the "top" house and if they seem like you won't like them or are ass holes feel free to try somewhere else. I joined one that was more in the middle but I joined because the guys I knew who were already gonna be my best friends for the rest of college already joined the previous semester and were cool dudes. As far as drinking goes, DONT OVER DO IT. Yes, go out and get fucked up on weekends and party with your friends but not until you do your homework and study first. You'll literally have some sort of potential drinking event every night if you want (if you join a 100+ person one) and not all can handle that kind of temptation. It fucked my grades pretty good, luckily I recovered but always regret that. I know that advise sounds like your moms but it's so true. School first. Treat it like your 9-5 full time job. Also, fraternities are great for networking, my bros come back to campus all the time to recruit for their new companies and will hook us up. Don't just be about the frat tho, join some other professional group associated with your major. And if your major isn't something useful, switch it now and not later. Have fun, college is amazing. And unless she is literally a play boy 10/10 hottie don't have an LTR in college. Just have plates and slay as much pussy as you can. Another regret I have, my girlfriend was fun but I missed out on so much ass for a girl who ended up never being that loyal anyways.

Joining a Fraternity was incredibly beneficial for me, but I wouldn't polarize it in terms of top and bottom tier. You should surround yourself with driven people because you are the average of the 5 people closest to you. Yes, you'll be closer with some guys in the house. That's how it works. In the end you're all working for the same goal. Trying to get paid and get laid.

The frat with the best GPA on my campus was 100% antisocial nerds. Their rush events consisted of LAN parties and pizza. I'm certain the 3 girls that hung out there had their pick of the litter for betabucks. The frat that got laid most was grimy as shit and poor academically. Girls loved them for the not giving a fuck vibe. In the end they placed poorly in the work force, some still sling drugs in the college town.

More important than anything, find a place where you get along with the brothers. Else you'll end up a loner anyways, even having letters. Second and still very critical, find guys who have drive and passion. Dudes who study but still party 3 nights a week. Guys who go on camping trips or outings instead of getting faced on $3 pitchers at the local bowling alley. Did they spend saturday cliff jumping or nursing their hangovers with chipotle. Looking at the rush events they throw is a good way to gauge this. How creative and adventurous a group is really comes through. You dont have to drink to the point of blacking out but apart from a medical condition I wouldnt consider many reasons to go mormon, but that's your choice. I knew a couple sober guys overall but very few. They came across as uptight.

Do it. I am as far from typical frat as you can get and I joined a fraternity. It was one of the best decisions I made in college. If your frat isnt a bunch of losers who spend the entire budget on partying it will be worth it.

At the very least it will force you to not sit on your ass everyday. It forces you to get involved and make the most of your college experience.

Ive made tons of connections, many of my brothers know people in law schools, med schools, ect. At the very least look at it as a networking opportunity.

If you don't like to drink or do drugs... don't. If your frat is halfway decent they won't care at all. If you feel like you cannot handle the peer pressure then you should introspect and work on that anyway.

I was an athlete and in a house. Probably most of the guys I have kept in touch with over the years from Uni are my fraternity brothers.

Do: rush a house (or houses, during Rush week) where you like the guys and will fit in.

Don't: Rush a house where they treat their pledges like shit and do things to them that you wouldn't do to a dog.

Do: Budget your time during your rush semester, so that you keep your grades up.

Don't: Develop a drinking habit.

If you like the brothers, will be able to handle pledgeship, and feel like the environment of the house will be a positive influence on your life whether that is academically, socially, or network wise, then the answer is a definitive yes.

Don't worry too much about house rank. I went to a university where greek life ran everything, and I can still say that house rank is mostly bullshit. My best friend in college was in the top house and considered joining that house to be his worst mistake in college. I joined an upper mid house and absolutely loved it. My other close friend joined a bottom tier house and enjoyed the hell out of it as well. House rank usually only defines which house throws the best parties and pulls the most hot girls on average. It doesn't necessarily say anything about the character of the members.

Think about this decision in two lights: what does this frat doing for you in the short term (your time at uni) and what is it doing for you long term (in the job market)? If the answer to both questions is "a ton" and you like the brothers there, then join. If the answer to the first one is "a lot" but the answer to the second is "not so much" (in terms of their connections to the world of the job market you're looking to enter), then you should consider joining some other fraternity that meets both those needs (the social and the life after). If the answer to both is "nothing", then you probably shouldn't join (no matter how much you like them).
