Not really. Even if you don't know how to dance, as long as you have a good time and they see you having a good time, they'll want to be part of it.

Yep. He acted like he didn't care about the attention. This often leads to attraction (very similar to avoiding a cat's gaze).
But once you stop doing that, and you give attention then what happens ? It feels like you gave in.
There are many other things that builds attraction like confidence. But maybe, just maybe, you are not made of 100% pure titanium confidence and when you try to share other interesting part of yourself you might feel like you gave in because the previous behaviour worked and now maybe you start to fail.
I suspect that if he used that language it means that the switch didn't work out and he was rejected.

My friend tries this strategy at the club and is actually a great dancer and it does nothing for him
The guys I see get grinded on are the ones who don't ask permission and while I know that's fucked up to a certain degree that's what I see happen in front of my eyes the last 20 times I went to the club
