My theory is we get so hung up on how other people perceive us we loose our ability to be naturally outgoing. Our actions become unnatural and forced. Making genuine connection difficult. Really highlights the importance of inner game.

Actually, he kind of mangled that quote. It's rather famous in the new age world, it's the title of a book by new age preacher Terry Cole Whittaker, "What You Think of Me is None of My Business." I like this book and I have the highest respect for Terry Cole Whittaker.

Most people are so self conscious that they're incapable of dealing with criticism. It's not that we're worried about what others think for the sake of wanting to know... we're worried that they'll react to something we say or do and we won't be able to handle it.

Your therapist is right. We all have the inalienable right to form misconceptions about you. And we will, whether we want to or not, if we bother to think about you at all.

At first I was tempted to offer a few gems of wisdom, i.e., cliches, that I'd heard over the years. On reflection, let me offer this instead:

Let's assume for a moment that we all get our 15 minutes of fame. What if yours are the wrong 15 minutes?

Maybe 15 minutes that you spent on the can; or fapping; or losing your cool with a waitress and making an uncharacteristic, misogynist and/or racist comment to her; or having a colonoscopy; or screwing up your grandma's recipe for red velvet cake and causing all the kids at your son's birthday party to blow velvety chunks across the floor; or saying confession that one time when you finally came clean about your sexual experimentation in college; or choking in a little league pennant game and striking out every time at bat; or that time you had a huge pimple on your dick and were scared shitless that it was either the clap (even though you were still a virgin) or a new form of dick cancer with oozing tumors that cling to the side of your shaft like giant custard dumpling dingleberries.

This could happen to any one of us (except for the parts that could only happen to men). The point is, you can't control what people think of you. The best PR person in the world couldn't control it; at best, they might improve your reputation plus or minus 10 percent.

So why waste any energy worrying about it? Be who you were meant to be; be true to yourself. Your loved ones will know whether or not you're getting it done--though not even all of them, and none of them all of the time.

So do it right for your own sake. And if you watch your hygiene, no one will ever know you had zits on your dick.
