Its the same gambit of approaching in the first place, could you get shot down? yes, but what happens if you don't even try?
Could you just walk away? Ask the girls if they know him, or if he is their boyfriend
You'll figure out pretty quick if he's got a stake and if you've got a right to back him down

It is possible that your pick up attempt was fairly obvious, which is completely ok, this whole thing probably worked out for the best and I wouldn't get hung up on it, its just one more approach

That said, other options could include dis-qualifying yourself so you don't look like you're making a pass

Guys and friends are just as important as the girls to focus on, but once a guy is cockblocking you're going to have to figure out if the girls actually know him and he's worth making friends with or getting the girls to help in shooting HIM down

After he kept going, you had to stand up for yourself but in a manly way. Just give him a look and say 'what the fuck?' and then to the girls 'do you know this guy??'. If the girls were fairly cool with you they'd just give that guy a look of disgust which would be his cue to walk away.

My question for you is what do you think his motivation was?

Maybe he was just some white knight who was worried. Not trying to be a jerk, but naive and worried.

Maybe he was just dumb and thought that was a good way for him to pick up girls.

Maybe you genuinely were creepy, and it was coming off that way.

Maybe one of the girls had and STD or something and he was trying to save you from that without saying it to her face.

Maybe he was jealous.

No matter which of these it was, I don't see a reason to be be phased by it. Evaluate the situation. You're the one who was there and can probably tell best what was going on. Try and figure out why he did it, and if you should change in any way, and then move on from it. Who cares what some skinny nerdy guy thinks, or two chicks you'll probably never see again?

When dudes come in on the offensive like this, trying to make you look bad, as usual, you should do the opposite of your initial instinct. Don't go on the offensive, don't get defensive. Instead, be the dude's biggest cheerleader. When he says you're creepy, laugh and say he's fucking hilarious (be genuine, not sarcastic). Tell the girls how awesome he is, tell him to hold his hand up to yours and say, holy shit ladies, look at those hands, you know this dude has a big dick. Put your arm around him as you talk him up as a subtle display of dominance. Say ridiculous, outlandish things about how he's great. Say things about how great he is that he could never possibly live up to and he'll start questioning himself since he knows those things aren't true.

This should throw him off since it's not the reaction he's expecting, shows the girls that you don't take yourself too seriously and makes you look awesome to be so positive and collaborative in reaction to being obviously insulted. Also shows extreme confidence to ignore the insult and actually try to push the girls onto him. He should be reactive to you and you'll put the social pressure on him instead. If he continues to be a dick, you keep going over the top with compliments and the girls will be able to sense he's not being playful and fun, he's just an asshole.

You could also gently nudge one of the girls towards him and say, you should get on your knees and suck his dick right here. She will naturally resist, you'll put a negative feeling in her when she thinks of sex with him and he will see her negative reaction and think she's not into him. I would do that when you decide it's time for him to leave. He's not going to stay if he thinks they aren't interested.

Hard to know what his intentions were. Maybe he enjoyed shooting you down (the same way a bully enjoys intimidating/hurting others). Maybe he was interested in one of the girls, and didn't enjoy seeing you talk to her. Maybe he was kinda drunk and he doesn't even know why he did it. I've had situations kinda similar to this, but I don't think the guy ever directly insulted me. Usually, he's trying to steal the interaction (by being more talkative and energetic), or shut me down (perhaps because he was her boyfriend, or a guy who was jealous of seeing that I might have a chance with the girl, or because he was white knighting).

I think the best thing to do is try to get the group on your side. Don't do anything weirdly aggressive or insulting to him (as some people on this thread have suggested). I think you can spoil the vibe with the girls if you get aggressive/insulting to him. I might give the girls a weird look and ask them, "Do you know this guy?" with a amused/confused/incredulous look on my face, but don't be angry or overly reactive to it. You should establish whether he's a total stranger or if he's a friend of theirs. If he's a stranger, you can give the girls a look like, "Yeah, we know this guy is weird, right?" (which will help in creating a bonding "we're in this together" moment). If he's a friend, you can just give him a weird look like he's the strange one and then continue on with the conversation. Hopefully, it throws him off his vibe enough that he decides to leave rather than be perceived as "the weird guy". If he walks away, you can either ignore the whole thing, or say something to the girls like, "We can all agree that was really weird, right?" But, don't let the guy spoil your mood or your vibe. That will just make it look like you're weak and easy messed-with. But, it takes time and experience to be non-reactive.

(Total side-note / storytime: last year, I was overseas, and I started talking to this German girl at Oktoberfest. While I was talking to her, I noticed this German guy about 10 feet away from us, staring at us. I wasn't sure who he was or why he was staring. After a few minutes of watching us talk, he comes over, and in broken English he says, "You should leave" (or some phrase to that effect). I was like, "What?" He repeats again, "You should leave". I said, "I don't understand what's going on." He repeats himself again, "You should leave". I look at her, and she's looking at the floor. She seems rather distressed. I can't figure out if she knows him. He hasn't said a word to her, and she hasn't said a word to him. I can't figure out if he's her boyfriend and is angry that she hasn't told me to "get lost". If he's her boyfriend, I can't help but wonder if he's controlling and jealous, and whether he's talking to give her shit for not telling me to "get lost" soon enough to make him happy. Or maybe he's a guy "friend" who wants to get with her, and doesn't like her talking to other guys. Or maybe he's a friend and thinks he's going to be a "white knight" and "protect" her from some guy who's interested in her (because "all those other guys have bad intentions"). Or maybe he's a stranger, and he doesn't like the idea of an American guy talking to a German girl. I can't figure it out. He tells me again, "You should leave". He's like a robot that can only muster one phrase in English. I could sense that this could turn into a fight really quickly, and I couldn't figure out his impetus. She looks super uncomfortable. He won't answer any of my questions about what's going on, and I wonder if he's even capable of speaking English beyond those words. I decided to just walk because I could feel that this was escalating into a fight, and even if I won the fight, I knew I was going to get kicked out of the beer tent. I'm still perplexed by the situation and think about it from time to time. I'm also not sure what would've been the right thing to do, and it's hard to come up with something on the spot - when you have a limited amount of time, and there's the pressure of adrenaline and social awkwardness all mixed together. The fact of the matter is that I've encountered a lot of guys who are trying to cockblock me, steal the girl I'm talking to, or just throw off the vibe in hopes of getting in there. I sometimes wonder if women know how much shit we have to put up with from other men.)

You did the right thing. I would have pulled him off to the side and said if you have a problem we can step outside and solve it. Mind you I come off intimidating to most men so they normally back off. Only ever do this if you can back it up
