I posted a few months ago about my upcoming trip to China. I've been here now for 2 weeks and I'm having some real troubles with cracking onto girls. The main issue seems to be language, I'm still really bad at Chinese and about 50% of the time people don't even understand what I am saying to them - and when they do it's still only really basic stuff like "where's the soap?".

I've been using Chinese Tinder (Tantan) but the chicks on it are really averse to meeting. I'm not sure whether this is just because my Chinese is so shit that I struggle to have fun, flirty chat to line up a date or just because the culture is a bit different (probs a bit of both).

I've had some really good interactions, and people are genuinely down to have a chat. I'm studying pretty hard so hopefully I can get my Chinese up to a decent level soon enough - I'm studying it at uni here so I really have no excuse.

Given this, my questions are:

(1) is it worth pursuing the online thing or is it just a total waste of time? I feel like having long convos in Chinese on Tantan might be helping my Chinese but killing any chance of dating these girls. To clarify I'm not just down to bang I am definitely down to date girls while I'm living here.

(2) genuinely don't know how to approach, admittedly I'm still new to this but short of just walking up to a girl and saying "you're cute" and holding out my phone I dunno what to do (I'm seriously considering trying this but I feel like it has a high chance of spooking). I don't go out or drink so all of my approaches are on campus/around the city. There also doesn't seem to be any societies or anything at the uni I'm at.
