If you want to control the conversation for the sake of being in control then someone else will have to explain how to do that. But if you want to control the conversation (or "stand out in a crowd") in order to pick up girls that is generally a poor use of time and energy. The best way to pick up girls in a crowd is...get rid of the crowd! Now obviously you don't just tell everyone to leave but one girl. It's really easy. Make eye contact. Tap her shoulder. Do any small gesture to get her attention. Then either say or motion that you want to step aside to talk to her! This is called isolation and it's a HUGE part of pickup. Logistics is everything, and no girl is gonna make out with you in a crowd. So bring her some place out of the crowd, quieter so you can build attraction and comfort. From there it is just like any other pickup and you're on your way.

If you are asking that question, my guess is that you are either an introvert, or the least extrovert of your group.

You need to understand what an introvert is, and what he does. (BTW: I am an introvert, the most introvert case you've ever seen).

Introverts don't really enjoy much talking just for the sake of talking, and usually do not contribute of they have nothing to contribute that would enrich the conversations. On the other hand, extrovert love to talk about nonsense, and have no problem overstating the obvious or talk about something that have no clue about while making off-the-wall statements as if they were factual statements.

Still, there's a lot you can do for your own game. These are a few pointers:

Get fit! You must be the one in best shape, /r/fitness can help here
have your own style of clothing, it doesn't have to be expensive, nor dress like a clown, just be interesting and something that you can relate
learn to play guitar. Then you will be the center of attention when late at night you'll be playing and everyone will be singing and drinking, home, on the lawn, beach, mountaintop....... you don't have to be the next Jimmy Page or the Edge, good enough is good enough
if not guitar, another instruments, but guitar is the one that women find the most sexy, and it's the most portable.
if not an instrument, follow a passion of yours, something social
It's OK to be in a group, at a party, take a few strategic side trips: to the kitchen, outside to get some air, etc.... do NOT follow any woman, let some woman follow/join you; then strike a one on one conversation there... escalate from there, either k-close or coffee date the following day or.....

You stand out in a crowd by being in all of the subgroups. If there's only one, you do it by only half being in that group. Think of all of the people in your life that seemed the ultra coolest—it's always the ones that come to parties late and leave early, that always seem like they're doing something totally awesome but they're giving you some attention too before they move on to something else, they're the ones that (with perfect timing) interrupt to tell a story or change the frame or move the scene somewhere else (hey, the party is moving to so-and-so, and then they say whoever wants to come, they're leaving in five, and then they exit). Etc.

You stand out in "the crowd" by only being partially engaged in it, while being occupied by your own other cool things that are happening.
