First of all, I feel you. Secondly, it won't go away until we try it bro. Just approach and do your best, see how it goes, and repeat until it becomes easier.

One thing I can tell you is that you have to first not be needy or clingy or too impressed from the start, secondly, act friendly to the rest of the group as well as the one you're aiming for, thirdly qualify early on by directly asking "who's single among you?" BUT do not jump the gun immediately towards the single one.

When it comes to people in groups, especially young people, naturally they look to each other for a socially safe reaction to the new person approaching, that’s why it takes so much confidence. To approach a group of young women, you may have to accept that their reactions may be based in their own insecurities and desperations to conform, so try not to let it get you down if it doesn’t go well. U just have to do it. It’s the only way to overcome anxiety.

As for people being mean. It does happen, especially at the beginning if your approach sucks.

But that’s the part of learning. Don’t take it personally.

When it comes to technical bits the best approach is indirect.

When u approach u have to be confident. Your energy level should be little bit higher than the group. U need to read the room to know. If u approach with lower energy u will be ignored and u will stand like an idiot. If u approach with very high energy u will make them uncomfortable and they will leave.

When u approach, first address the whole group. A person who is leader will greet u. And now talk with a leader of the group.

Is better not to show any favourites. If a group realised that u are her to pick one of their friends they will start to make fun of her or you or the situation, basically it becomes like a kindergarten. So ideally do not let them know your true intentions.

Truth is the fact that u approach a group, and can hold a conversation, shows high social proof, so u do not need to try too hard win them over.

At some point one of the girls in the group will start asking u questions, this is a hook point. It is very likely that a girl who asks u most questions is the one who is the most interested in u. Sometimes, that girl is the one u like, sometimes is not. Just to be aware.

At the end of conversation say something like this “i have to run. It was nice talking with u guys, let’s catch up later, do u have social/phone number?”

Then if a group is small u can take all the numbers if u have big group over 4-7 people. Then u have three choices:

Take the number of the leader. But this way u may not have opportunity to meet the girl u like. Unless the leader is one u like. So this is not the best option.
Ask number for a girl u like. However, if she didn’t talked to u and showed no interest she might refuse.
Get the number from the girl who showed the most interest. That’s the safest bet. She will gladly give u and most likely she won’t ghost u. However, often that girl is not the one u liked.

So it’s always a trade off. U have to read the situation.

"will be mean to me" I have the same fear. In any case approaching groups is best done with a group of your own, preferably a group with both women and men.

It’s for sure harder in groups so you are not alone there. Ideally do all women groups to start if you’re gonna do it. But it is harder so just accept it
