I actually have a hard time with this as well. If she's giving you playful sarcastic banter that could also mean she's just a jokey person. But if it's directly towards you your best bet when given any burn is to agree and amplify. Agree with the insult and further extend it. That's what I would do.

There's another way to flirt without teasing and banter by the way, it's leading. If you grab her hand and lead her somewhere and she complies, that is also flirting. Leading and directing her and going places with her will suffice to escalating, however teasing and playful banter will always help. If you're lacking on it though work to your strengths and try to lead and also try to banter as well.

Don't be reactive you'd be surprised how much smiling or ignoring it goes on to help in my opinion. You didn't give an example so i cant give witty comebacks, just have fun with what she said.

Honestly, IMO, it is far better to be witty and make fun of her back then it is to wilt down. It's a shit test. The girl wants to see you mess with her, not agree with her.

Good that acknowledge your shortcomings and want to get better. Since each situation is different you should try to remember the comments and be ready for them next time but there is no magic line that answers each comment. The goal to keep in mind is that you are trying to gain rapport. You are trying to be more comfortable, not less. Firing back with your own witty comment can come off reactive if you aren't playful enough so be careful there. I'd say the best response, unless you have a very playful and fun comeback, is to acknowledge that she just dealt you a "burn" of sorts. The "ohhhhh snap!" Sort of response that your friends might say when bustin each others balls followed by some laughter and high fives. She is throwing you a shit test and most guys get defensive. If you don't get defensive then you will seperate yourself from the pack. Please NOTE I'm not saying let her walk all over you. If she says something rude as a shit test, it needs to be acknowledged. If she thinks she can just keep treating you like shit, she will. Acknowledge that she said something mean, just don't let her think you are offended by it. You shouldn't be offended by it anyway.

You can practice. Have dialoges with yourself, and try to be witty. You1, continues the witty line of you2, and so on. That helped me. Try to do it fast, fail, laugh and repeat. You will get better.

Pretend like you take offense to it, like make a really serious face for a solid three seconds, then grin at her or laugh at her face because she'll be afraid she offended you. Honesty's probably your best help when it comes to banter.

The best answer to a challenge/tease is to logically analyze her statement, be honest, and fire it back at her. IF you analyze stand up comedians, that's all they basically do. So if a girl says to you "how big is your dick" I would just say "why you are asking how big my dick is? That's a weird question to ask in a bar." Or something to that effect.

Try the socratic method. The great philosopher Socrates used to ask questions of people and then re-state their answers back to them, often with hilarious results (seriously, most of Plato is like one big long comedy routine). So do that. Ask the person anything, like what’s your name? what do you do for a living? where are you from? — and then repeat their answer back to them, in your own words. Repeating the answer in your own words not only starts to create the tension that will provide laughs, but it also helps the rest of the audience follow along. As you progress, the questions are naturally going to get more complex, because that’s how a conversation works. If you ask a person what they do for a living, they can just say “human resources manager” but your next question is naturally going to be more complicated. You might ask “What does a human resource manager do?” or “Do you enjoy it?” The person has to consider these types of questions more deeply and give a longer, more interesting answer. Then you repeat their answer in your own words. If you are honest, and let a bit of your own point of view start creeping in to your summary of their answer, you will get laughs. If the answers they give don’t make sense to you, don’t worry! That’s a golden opportunity! Re-stating something you don’t understand is funny. Be honest and summarize it in a way that sums up what you think they were trying to say.
