I go out alone a lot actually. Most of my friends have girlfriends, I enjoy the thrill of the game, so they don't always come out to game girls. I tend to go by myself often. Although they are guys and they have fun too, so they do wing me often as well. I use the following:

(Clearly by yourself) "Long day at work. Had to stop in to grab a quick drink before I go home"

(at busy club) "My friends are around here somewhere...." while pointing around the busy club. and then just shake it off and stack forward. Not that hard.

"My friends just left, it's passed their bedtime. I still have some time, but I'm leaving soon as well" (also gives you good false time constraint)

Sometimes it can be easier, and all the rewards are based solely on your work. It also makes you be more social, because you don't have the crutch to lean on.

Reasons to be out on your own: "I just needed to get a drink tonight with no pressure" or just don't even bring it up. It's totally natural to go out on your own.

Just do solo day game... there's no problem with being out in a shopping district on your own, and you can just open one sets.

If they ask where you're friends are or why you are alone, you simply say:

"I was supposed to meet a friend but he bailed on me, so I figured I might as well have some fun and meet some new friends since I'm already out."

Don't be ashamed of rolling solo. "I wanted to check out this band/DJ/club" is a good line if venue-appropriate, as others have suggested.

I recommend you avoid lying to conceal that you're alone, because it's too easy to slip up. On the other hand, outrageous, obvious misstatements, playfully made, are fine: "Oh, we work as lion tamers and he's recovering from a nasty skull bite."

Obviously, a good wing is ideal, but solo is way better than a bad wingman. Probably about 1/2 of my hook-ups are wingless, it's really not that much different. Just embrace it, keep alpha body language and project confidence.

The toughest part is isolating one girl if there's a set of two or three.
