Probably a really beta question but... Is using your business card a good way to display status or am I just shitting myself?

Can you step back for a second and think... give her your what? Business card? Are you trying to do business with her? And no, we're not talking innuendo here, I mean legitimately are you making a business connection? No? Then save it.

IMO, business cards are not a way to display status, they're a way to exchange contact information with people you're interested in networking with in a business sense. Anyone can make a business card that says anything they'd like on it. To me, giving one out to a woman says "I'm too scared to ask for your number, here's my contact info, lets do lunch some time." It'll get thrown in the trash. Don't do it.

I've done it without thinking because it has my web address on it and as a photographer some girls want to check out my portfolio. All I can say is that without thinking, ~10% of the time, it works every time.

Never, ever use it instead of asking a girl to put her number in your phone though.

Nah, go with your instincts. Unless you're chatting up someone at business-related event, and use it as a way to exchange contact info, it's way too likely to come off as cheesy.

I think it all comes down to how you act when you give it. You know, confidence and all that stuff. I used to give out my business card to girls all the time. A few hookups here and there. Doesn't work most of the time. I used to get some calls and emails. I say "used to", because I stopped giving out business cards. Because I started dating my now girlfriend. By a business card. Cheesy? Hell yes. Success? In my eyes, I did.

I have some joke card made up, throw out a "here take my card" in a purposely cheesey/cheeky way. Throw it at her so she has to catch it or pick it up, guaranteed it piques interest. I have one with my actual number on the back but it just says "Philosophy, Philantropy, Philandering" on the front, and my "job" on the back just says "Business Card Owner". I have another that just reads "My Penis is Gigantic.", you gotta feel out the situation if you're going to use that one though...

Would I give out a card for one of my real businesses? Nope, lame. If you need that to qualify you can probably work it into the comversation if you really thought it would help, or she might ask what you do for a living.

Seems pretty beta to me. Where's the mystery in that? Never tell a woman what you actually do for a living. Tell her you direct midget porn, or something. If you qualify her for just a one nighter, tell her, in all seriousness, that you are unemployed.

I always give my business card to random people I knew from high school when I bump into them, as a way to display status, just so they know I'm actually doing something with my life now, without actually saying it or bragging.

I wouldn't recommend giving it to a girl that you are interested in. In this case I think you should be more direct about your intentions.

It is much too formal. I had a girl once give her business card to me, because I couldn't spell her name right on my phone (she offered, I didn't ask). Immediately afterwards, she blushed and said that maybe that was "too formal" :P

I'll combat all the naysayers and say that with the right set up, it could work.

Your instincts are right thought. It is really cheesy. That can actually work for some guys though. If you are regularly cheesy and getting the right kinds of responses (balancing cheesy and sexy so that you don't come off as a clown) then your business card could certainly work in there.

Like any other prop, it's all in how you use it.

For most guys though, no. Probably not the best idea.

I think it's a great way to show your status. But you don't give away your business card to someone you just met, right?

Talk to her little bit, impress her, make it seem that she earned your card. It's a good idea, and I think it'll work.

But hey, don't boast around.
