Shaking hands is good when you first meet a girl, it'd be weird in most scenarios to try and hug them when you are first introduced.

Also the handshake is your first chance to make a confident, dominant impression. Be assertive, cheerful and look them straight in the eye when you introduce yourself. Also if its a girl you're interested in don't break the handshake until they do. Hold your frame.

Handshakes are generally fine, but if you can you should go for the hug.

I once hooked up with a chick over the internet. She invited me to her place and as soon as I walked in I gave her a handshake. I immediately could tell that wasn't the right move haha.

It all depends on the context. If you're at a bar or something then a small hug is best. If it's a more formal environment then just shake their hand.

always shake hands. You can also keep your hand there and wait for her to pull away first. If she is interested she will often keep her hand in yours.

if someone extends their hand for one, i'll often ask if they want a hug instead.

i do this with men and women. less in business contexts, though (maybe i should do it there, too, to see how people react?).

I handshake unless the girl goes in for a hug, then I hug. A handshake is a universal, western way to introduce oneself regardless of sex.
