What are some good general questions/topics as an excuse to approach a girl in the same class?

Talk to her exactly how you would talk to your good friend (but not your best friend you who talk shit to all the time). Sorry I may be dating myself, but if you call your friends dude call her dude after she says something that's interesting.

As for a topic pick something you give a shit about and don't just try to talk about whatever you think she'll like. If you're faking a conversation it's really really obvious and unattractive.

As a lead in topic just mention whatever is happening at the time. Maybe talk about the project you just worked on, especially if you're genuinely interested in it. If you ask most women they will say over and over that they are attracted to people who have their own interests and passions. Obviously if your passion is Live Action Roleplaying or something not very well understood, you might want to wait on that (although you can pull it off if you present it confidently), but if you like anything that's even remotely socially acceptable that's a great conversation.

Also don't forget to let her talk. I focused on what you say, but this might be the most important thing. If she wants to talk about stuff then you should actually LISTEN to her and latch onto anything you guys have in common. Even if you don't know what to say about the topic, just ask her any questions about anything. If you have no idea what something is, but have heard the term before maybe say "Ohhh I've heard of that but I've actually never really understood exactly what's going on. How long have you been doing that for?"

Once again, just talk like you're talking to your friend so it comes out naturally. Don't try to change your personality or speech patterns (this is assuming you talk to your friends like a half-way "normal" person.)

This means you were not listening, you were worrying about what to say. Which is ironic because if you focus on listening actively, then she hands you all the material you need.

You never need an "excuse" to talk to somebody; just talk to them. Like u/recyclablebanthas said, if you can't think of anything to think about you either aren't curious about her, which will turn her off right away, or you just aren't listening. I imagine you don't have this problem with your friends, so treat it like that.

Look on sites for local or University news and if you find anything that's worth commenting on or something you can put a funny spin on, bring it up to her. You can always ask her if she wants to study together sometime, or how she did on a homework assignment, project, or test just to get things going.

Topics that are generally safe and most people can relate to are: family, occupation, recreation, and dreams.

The easiest way to strike up a casual conversation is to reference a previous topic, with a new spin or perspective or funny story to share.

Ask about how a test went. Why is the teacher such a dick. etc etc. Just say some generic comment like that and the conversation will start from there.
