I usually gauge who she is more interested in. The best way to tell is by paying attention to who she focuses on most when speaking. It's honestly quite easy to detect.

Once you figure that out, be a bro if she's not into you and wing-man it. Probably give them some space, whatever. If she is into you, then just do your thing.

You're a good sport and step back and stop flirting as soon as you note your friend is interested of course! Plenty of girls to go around.

Even better is to take it a step further, and fully support / wingman him in any case you can, for example by leaving them alone, or by letting him do more of the talking etc...

It's karma, and will pay off :)

Two notes:

careful that you stopping flirting and stepping back and becoming more 'aloof' is not actually making you the more attractive one to her! (which is a more realistic scenario then you'd perhaps think)
if your friend makes a move with, and it becomes obvious that he's not getting anywhere, and you check with him first to assure that he's cool with it, you may go in again and give it a shot yourself.

Alternatively, make it into a game. This needs to be done with big shit-eating grins and confidence but it's hilarious if it works out.

Essentially, you start playing blind-date with the three of you. Opposite sides of the wall or just with their backs to eachother. You/friend ask questions, they answer, then you switch positions. It's key to make the questions absolutely absurd and or sexual. Like, would you ever lick chocolate off his balls? for example. Or make up a story together where you give the first line and they each add their own. For example, A gay man walks into a bar...

After that half hour of hearty laughs you give eachother the nod, one goes off to the bathroom with her, the other keeps gaming.

I would say to continue flirting, the both of you. A woman will make a decision based on what she likes, and she will make it very clear through conversation and body language. If you guys are real friends, no matter what the outcome is, you will remain friends and laugh at the fact that one of you scored over the other.

When I sat down with a friend of mine and a girl, I actually sent him a text while we were at the table asking if he liked her, if he was really tying to go for it. He responded that he was really interested in another classmate of his. So I went for it.

So I would talk to him with respect, figure out who cares more, and let him go for it.
