I run the same gambit every time for this one, it's just become reflexive.

Her: What do you do?

Me: Awful question...for 2 reasons. 1 because it's boring, and 2 because no one believes me when I tell them, so it becomes a whole....thing.

Her: C'mon now you have to tell me.

Me: Ok fine, I'm a cetacean behavioral specialist.

Her: Huh? What's that?

Me: Dolphin Trainer. I'm a dolphin trainer.

Her: No way blah blah, either she believes it or she doesn't. Either way, you cop to it pretty quickly if she buys it, because you don't want to actually be a liar, just someone having fun. I've been told by girls that this trick is what got them interested in me, just because I was being a challenge.

You can use any job, zoo trainer, balloon pilot, zamboni driver, whatever. I've used rodeo clown but that's too obviously fake. Just have fun with it.

The trick is NOT to just come right out and immediately say "I'm a tiger breeder", or something. The point of the gambit is to pique their interest and make them drag it out of you. Then you cop to the lie and tell them what you really do, and immediately change the subject.

Computer science is an AMAZING thing to be in right now. Own it. There are ways to talk about it without boggling people's brains.

If you're not passionate about it, then that's a deeper problem.

You can make anything be interesting. It's how you portray using the correct form of....wait for it....confidence. Cliché I'm saying confidence, but it's like physics is to the natural sciences (everything else; biology, chemistry, etc. is built off of physics).

There are people out there with more boring and interesting jobs that are in the same situation but if you have a unique and interesting personality and embrace that you have a degree in a really hard science, people will look up to you. I can't count how many times I've disliked something simply because I was around a douchebag that liked the same thing for a while. I knew a douchebag with a Camaro and suddenly I found myself disliking Camaros.

Mind you, going into deal about code and programming will be a boring subject but your job has some global importance that you can make a story about it.

What if your job is pretty badass? Mine kind of is...I guess I usually just ask people to guess. One girl nailed it; it's kind of a niche thing so that was awesome on her part.

Also working in computer science, I just tell “I’m a writer”, when they ask “oh, really? what do you write?”, you just answer “softwares”. Most of the time they ask some more details and you can explain in an interesting way what you do (as PrimeTime984 said: "I write programs that help people do X" sounds way better than "I write code".) and then move on.

I’ve found that this little “joke” has his effect.

Personally, I usually mix and match these for my own amusement, I now always go with:

Her: So, what do you do for a living/where do you work.

Me: I...make the world a better place every day.

Her: Wow! Really? What do you do?

Me: I usually keep it a secret. You really wanna know?

Her: I do now, yeah! What is it?

Me: Come closer, I don't want anyone listening in.

She usually scoots a bit closer as I look around the room pretending to make sure we're "clear".

Me: I'm a Ferret tickler (this one sometimes falls flat as you have to make sure you say the word "Ferret" clearly, otherwise she just goes "A what?")

or

I teach mice how to box each other

or

Ryan Gosling's body double (which I clearly am NOT, which is why it's funny I guess).

or

I work for a bedding company. I'm the guy that tucks in the sheets for the photoshoots of their products. (that line sucks, just made it up as I remember being annoyed at tucking in my sheets last night and how my bed never looks like it does in the photos...yes I have just bought a new bed).

Anything. Any ludicrous job can be funny. I just always say it with a hint of cocky, and always, let the title sink in for her for a second (she will either laugh or have a confused face or a dissapointed one), then smile at her afterward so she KNOWS you're joking.

The Ferret tickler is my most-used line because you can get so in to it, and I'm only EVER interested in a girl that plays along. If she laughs or giggles and says:

"You know I hear that's really heading up in the world."

Or something to that effect, then it's on. She won't be able to stop me. I can make anything up. Like how I train them, what treats I use, what apparattus I use etc.

I'll only disclose what I actually do if she at some point says "No, seriously, what do you do?" Even if she does, I cockily tell her I'm serious (whilst laughing myself), and keep a bit of tease going.

Then I'll go:

"Well in all honesty, I'm a consultant and analyst for water companies to tell them about their leakage figures and how much it will cost them to reduce it. So when you see a reduction in your water bills, you owe me a drink."

If she probes further, I'll say:

"I'd go into detail, but if I did, there'd be a insertname-shaped hole in that window as you flee, screaming with boredom."

Still need to work on that, as all I do is work on spreadsheets and run formula calculations and am also partly in charge of office billing. No way to make that sound...fun.

Either way though, I'll drop the work stuff asap after the teasing, especially if she insists it out of me. Give them a brief outline then drop the subject and move on to fun questions about her.

You need to make it exciting, not boring.

There are two standard approaches.

Oldschool: Don't tell her what you do. Make it into a game where you throw out ridiculous jobs (ass model is the classic, edible underwear taste-tester, somali pirate catcher) never really saying what you do. This is fun for both of you, and establishes that you are in control and don't feel the need to answer her every question or be serious at all.

Newschool: Tell her, but tell her in the most passionate, emotional, and exciting way possible (if that is possible with computer science :p) then quickly change the subject to something more interesting.

Bottom line, if you do the right stuff in other areas, what you do for work really probably won't matter that much to most girls, its just part of getting to know you.

Women don't care what you do, so long as you're passionate about it AND can portray that passion. You can make anything sound interesting. "I write programs that help people do X" sounds way better than "I write code".

Also a funny initial response can lighten that mood. Style's "I'm an ass model" is good, or you could go with "I'm a fluffer for pornos" or whatever other ridiculous job you can think of... then when she asks again share your passion.
