If you are aiming for 50/50 custody, and you're both working, child support is not necessarily a foregone conclusion. Don't agree to anything verbally or otherwise without first considering consequences and talking to a lawyer.

Also my feeling is sending her a quarter of your paycheck could be considered agreement to some kind of payment terms, so you'd better stop that before it becomes the default position she asks for. Setting aside for divorce costs is a better idea.

Also keep in mind that until there are parenting orders you have as much right to your child as she does. Do not believe her bullshit. You could just as easily take the child away from her, so don't let her use that as a bargaining chip against you.

I think you are setting a bad presedence. Giving her a quarter of your salary makes divorce look more palatable. Put that money in a savings account, and if the court says give it to her; give it to her. If you make similar salaries and shared custody the court could order no support.

If she requested a divorce, and divorce takes about a year; she should see what life is like without you chipping in. Pay half for the child care and nothing else. It is not an amicable divorce if all of the terms are in her favor. Talk to your attorney and don't agree on anything without running it past him first.

Divorce is a permanent state of living separate while coparenting. If you are making close to the same money why would you help her pay her bills. Single parents struggle; when she chose to be a single parent; she chose to join that struggle. Child support is for the child; not to supplement rent, or by food for your Ex.

Call a lawyer, silly to be paying child support if you are sharing child custody 50/50. Doing "what is right" won't get you any good boy points w/ the courts. Find out the laws and follow them. Be prepared for her to get ugly if/when things don't go her way. Maybe she won't, but still you should be prepared for it. Call a lawyer.
