Abstract

Sex plays a crucial role in human brain development, aging, and the manifestation of psychiatric and neurological disorders. However, our understanding of sex differences in human functional brain organization and their behavioral consequences has been hindered by inconsistent findings and a lack of replication. Here, we address these challenges using a spatiotemporal deep neural network (stDNN) model to uncover latent functional brain dynamics that distinguish male and female brains. Our stDNN model accurately differentiated male and female brains, demonstrating consistently high cross-validation accuracy (>90%), replicability, and generalizability across multisession data from the same individuals and three independent cohorts (N ~ 1,500 young adults aged 20 to 35). Explainable AI (XAI) analysis revealed that brain features associated with the default mode network, striatum, and limbic network consistently exhibited significant sex differences (effect sizes > 1.5) across sessions and independent cohorts. Furthermore, XAI-derived brain features accurately predicted sex-specific cognitive profiles, a finding that was also independently replicated. Our results demonstrate that sex differences in functional brain dynamics are not only highly replicable and generalizable but also behaviorally relevant, challenging the notion of a continuum in male-female brain organization. Our findings underscore the crucial role of sex as a biological determinant in human brain organization, have significant implications for developing personalized sex-specific biomarkers in psychiatric and neurological disorders, and provide innovative AI-based computational tools for future research.

Feminists will deny any sexual dichotomy between M/F brains, in order to access CEO positions.... yet, have no problem in accepting sexual dichotomy in leaving the grunt jobs to men, because they are bigger and stronger.

The scientific method doesn't care about gender politics. Just as germ theory faded into obscurity and Darwin's work outlived its detractors, the politically driven insistence that male and female brains are identical will be considered bizarre in the future.

Scientific correctness > political correctness.

Who would have thought. on one hand you have people who believe in evolution but on the other they can't consider the gender related implications because greedy women tell them there is none and are being blinded by the idea of being empowered.

I consider myself a proper feminist in the sense that men and women aren't equal but equally human and both deserve to be seen as equally valuable. Just that nowadays society thinks women are better.

There are studies from 20+ years ago where they showed that mens communication skills were unimpaired when interaction between the left and right brain was blocked. However, womens communication skills were significantly impaired under the same conditions.

Why this study is so important for the men’s movement

Based on the claim that everyone is equal, men experience a range of discrimination (e.g. professionally). This discrimination is justified by the claim that there are no natural differences in performance. The assumption is that the performance and interests of the sexes are identical.

Different results in performance must be due to unfair practices of the patriarchy and are evidence of toxic masculinity. This is seen as a justification for taking measures that disadvantage men (e.g. professionally).

This study provides evidence that men and women are not biologically equal. In particular, that this inequality is not reduced to physical strength alone. This study shows that the brains of men and women function fundamentally differently.

It is therefore questionable to claim that all people are equal and that differences must be actively combated. The differences can be explained biologically. This brands disadvantages for men in professional life as sexist. This study is an important contribution to removing the breeding ground for discrimination against men.

This only confirms what everyone has said for hundreds of years, it is not related to men's rights or issues.
