Hello, gentlemen. I have been reading here for a while, and as a straight male a popular topic appears to be the Friend Zone. Allow me to share my story with you. I have been helping a girl, let's call her A, with her homework, her boyfriend troubles, even getting him to leave a party because his presence made her feel uncomfortable. Every day I feel like I have given this girl everything, and my feelings for her grow. One day I sat down with her, whilst were lying on the couch together watching Dexter on Netflix, that I found myself wishing to be with her, and I asked her if she would like to be my girlfriend. She said that she did not feel that way about me, but that she would love to still be friends. At this, I became very upset and started pointing out how I had been helping her with everything and had been there for her every single time she needed me, and that she wasn't being fair by not giving me a chance. Then, she said something which made me reconsider everything. She said to me "Would you be angry with Callum [my best friend] if he didn't want to go out with you? After you've been such a good friend to him for so long?" I thought at first that this was a stupid question. I said to her "Obviously not, he's just my friend, and he's not gay, and I'm not gay". A replied "He's not gay, so he won't be attracted to you. You don't feel angry with him for not being attracted to you, so why would you feel angry with me?" At this moment, it seemed like everything had stopped. I thought that I'd come right back, with an incredible answer that would put an end to her arguing, however I just sat there, dumbfounded - I could not come up with an answer to her. Suddenly, I felt like a massive jerk, because I had just been rude and unkind to this girl who was in reality a great friend to me, simply because she did not feel the same way about me as I did for her. After all, she cannot control her feelings for me any more than I can control mine for her. Any thoughts on this, gentlemen?
