Sometimes there is a story within a story.
http://news.nationalpost.com/2015/01/19/women-in-public-service-outnumber-men-two-to-one-for-disability-claims/
The focus of this article is that women are on disability at a much higher rate than men - mainly for mental illnesses. The question immediately becomes (for the author) 'why are so many women on disability and how do we help stop this.'
But buried within the story is another story:
"In absolute numbers, 1,968 women were approved for disability in 2013 compared with 864 men."
The interesting thing to note here is that we don't get the statistic of how many men were denied as opposed to women. So women get approved at a higher rate? But are men and women submitting claims at different rates as well? Or are men just less likely to get approved.
Oh wait. There it is, tucked away on the sidebar...
"For women, 16.5 of every 1,000 were approved for claims. For men, 8.6 of every 1,000 were approved."
So basically double in terms of percentages.
Long story short, a worker is twice as likely to be approved for disability if they are a woman.
I think we can chalk up another one under 'female privilege.'
Female privilege is being twice as likely to get your disablity claim approved.
