I hope somebody sues the duplicitous a-holes.

Although it's illegal and although the UK equality commission seems to say that it takes these things seriously, I notice that their web site doesn't even have a way to contact them to tell them about such abuses, although apparently someone rang them up about it, with ambiguous results (old thread)

I found this boiler-plate advice on a CAB site. (CAB = Citizens Advice Bureau, which is a free generic advice service that has offices all across the UK).

link

They say, "[give] details of the problem to an advice agency who may be able to refer it to the Equality and Human Rights Commission if you believe the problem is widespread."

So I don't know if anyone in the UK, preferably near to Hitchin wants to try that with the local CAB here:

https://northhertscab.org.uk/get-advice/

The blog also says their local authority supports sex discrimination which is certainly a lie but could be pursued with the local authority, (which i think is the North Hertfordshire District Council ?)

In the UK, The EHRC has been made toothless, equality is only enforced by court action.

Someone in the UK would have to buy a membership, attend the gym and then sue. I can assure you, Government, Local Government and so many Businesses and service providers (including the NHS) don't want the apple cart upset in anyway .... which is why When Peter Lloyd Sued Camden Council it was all settled out of court and on the QT.

Dear Wargame4life, If you are in the UK you are overly optimistic if you think that the Equality Advisory Service has any purpose or value. If you are not in the UK your kindness is appreciated, and your error understandable. The EASS (Equality Advisory and Support Service) are terrible and frankly a waste of space! (Sorry to any employees reading this - you managment and government Mandarins are the issue).

Women pay less. Women get extras:

"...separate womens training area..."

"...Women's changing rooms have built in hairdryers & hair straighteners, dedicated make up areas, private cubicled showers & changing rooms..."

[–]rg57 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh... so a clerical error then... men should be paying less.

I can't see the claimed explanation for their pricing policy. A very strange company.

Here's the original thread for those who didn't catch it the other week: https://www.reddit.com/r/MensRights/comments/31ragv/this_uk_gym_charges_men_60_more_than_women_for/

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I can't find it either. Maybe its more of an aspirational claim. They aspire to explain once they've thought up a reason. No idea what their local authority is on about. Seems a fairly open and shut case of gender discrimination. A pool in Kentish town had to make a settlement for a guy because of a women's only hour, ans this seems far more egregious than that.

[–]goatsandbros 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I also can't see anything. It's odd that they'd state this:

...we were vilified by a person or persons unknown who obviously have no idea how a gym like ours works...

And yet make no attempt to explain how a "gym like theirs" works. Why wouldn't they just give an explanation, since their statement above implies that they feel such a thing would would be the antidote to all the criticism?

[–]StrikingEarth 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm legit wondering what separates their gym from all the others

[–]garglemesh42 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'd say "discrimination against men", but other gyms do it, too. Like having women's only hours without having men's only hours, and making it fair by having them both be at the good times of days with the same frequency, and so on.

do you have a link for that , i'm interested

It's the Peter Lloyd one linked above. Actually a gym, not a pool.

[–]BlacknOrangeZ 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I wonder how this is different to pubs and clubs discounting drinks/admission for women. Can someone explain? Maybe it's desirable for a gym to have a lot of female clients because males follow (even if they have to pay a little more)?

And I still believe this could've been handled better. Politely raising public awareness and discouraging people from going to the gym would've been a better way to go. Simply don't give them money. They can't maintain sexist membership costs if there are no memberships at all. Hacking and attacking, as they claim to have occurred, only gives them more ammunition; now they get to claim they are victims of these crazy MRA types.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

But everyone is hacked and attacked that way. That's how the internet works. My twitter was "hacked" [easy password at the time, so they likely just ran it through a generator] years ago. And I'm a nobody, and I literally hadn't even used my account yet. It had sat idle for a few years!

It's just that no one cares unless it's happening to women [feminists].

And it doesn't even have to be from an actual MRA. They have no evidence it actually is. Trolls love stirring the pot, so it's not unheard of for them to jump in the middle of disputes to make things "worse".

People don't understand the internet at all. And pointing this out to these people is "harassment", and "supporting" the behavior. Then you'll get put on their blockbot.

It seems unlikely to me that this timing was a coincidence.

You don't seem to know how trolls work. Finding these situations late wouldn't really make a big splash.

You can't determine a group based on the internet actions. The internet is too faceless for that. I could go create some accounts and post as a feminist around the internet, doesn't mean I am one. But it would be easy to do. There's nothing stopping anyone from doing the same. That's why judging groups based on the internet behaviors is stupid. The culture here is very different. Unless you are capable of filtering out the b/s, which most are not.

a) I personally don't accept it. I think it's unfair to charge men more for insurance, for example. I was a better driver than my older sister, but due to being younger and a man I had to pay more. Despite her getting into multiple accidents, and getting tickets all the time for speeding. We should be charged more at the beginning, and it should reduced [or increase] based on our merits as a driver. Not our genitals or how old we are.

b) I don't think it is their right, if they serve the public [since this particular link isn't clear on that, I'll speak generally]. If you serve the public, serve it equally or get out of here.

Otherwise, you can discriminate pretty obviously without saying "no blacks". Just price it higher than you know they can afford and hope no wealthy ones walk in the door. I mean, why not? Where's the limit? If we allow it, why not allow it completely?

And the assumption people who complain about this are still giving them money is pointless. I'd wager they are already not giving them business. Doesn't mean you shouldn't try to fix the problem though. Many who do use their money there may not realize the issue if you just 'ignore it'.

[–]BlacknOrangeZ 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's a bit paranoid to think that feminist trolls are putting on an MRA mask and attacking this person like some kind of double agent. Shouldn't matter anyway, it doesn't make the legitimate argument any less valid just because some people have gone rogue.

We should be charged more at the beginning, and it should reduced [or increase] based on our merits as a driver

I completely agree. But if insurance companies are free to charge whatever they like for different people (as in the case of this gym, apparently), wouldn't you simply opt not to insure yourself through the one that charges you more for being male? Wouldn't you go to an insurer who adjusts price based on your ability/safety as a driver?

If we allow it, why not allow it completely?

I agree, why not? Who is going to want to go to a business that openly discriminates like that? Who is going to want to be seen going into a "Whites Only" gym? Why would a black person want to argue the point so that they can give this racist their money!? Surely they would prefer to go to a different gym where they feel welcome and accepted. Surely everyone would, black or otherwise.

just 'ignore it'

I never suggested this. Everyone should be made very aware of their policy. Everyone who goes there should know they are funding a sexist business, and they ought to be held socially accountable for that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No where did I say it was feminist trolls. Just trolls. We're done. I don't have time for people who argue phantoms.

[–]tallwheel 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Okay, since we obviously have no idea how a gym like yours works, would you care to explain it for us dumb laymen? I might be sympathetic if you had stated some logical reasoning for the rate difference, but since I have yet to see any...

[–]garglemesh42 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Obviously, somebody has to pay for all those perks that women get. The obvious answer: charge men more. Why, it's just like the family courts, only people don't get hurt as bad!

[–]PerniciousOne 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wonder if they are paying their new female fitness instructor 75% of what they are paying the male instructors.

[–]_pluto_ 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

...So we can put an end to the idea that males and females are "equal" in the UK.
