I'm assistant director for a children's christmas play this season, and I just noticed something tonight about the way the boys in the cast interact. The elementary school aged boys are confused about how to interact with people generally. I remember this same problem when I was a kid. Tonight, it crystallised in my mind the reason for that. These boys are given no respect by the girls. The girls are very haughty towards them; the girls are looking at them through the eyes of a stereotype. There is one exception - a girl who fancies herself to be a tomboy - she's really kind towards the boys, and gets on well with them.

It's odd that I just started seeing this tonight, after weeks of working with the kids. All the kids really like me, a male director - and they are very affectionate and appreciative of what I do for them. Until now, this difference in character towards me has kept me from seeing how they treat the boys in the group.

One of these boys is really fidgety - almost ADHD - but I see that there's clearly a social dynamic which constitutes the entire cause of his problem. The women and girls in his life just won't be satisified no matter what he does, right or wrong. He can never live up to whatever standards they aren't clear about with him. And he doesn't see clearly that the problem is in them, not him... and so basically, he's lost all his self confidence, and just tries to do the best he can.
