Largest ever survey of college students shows vast differences in acceptance of free speech by demographic: black, LGBT & liberals less accepting of others

Opposing viewpoints

Students reported an alarming willingness to shut down certain speakers: 87% of students reported that Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders should be allowed to share his views on campus, but only 69% said the same for President Donald Trump and 78% for former Vice President Joe Biden. Students identifying as Republican or Independent were more tolerant of speakers than Democratic students: 71% of strong Republicans support Biden coming to campus, compared to 49% of strong Democrats reporting the same for Trump.

Female students reported less tolerance for speakers than male students.
LGBT students reported less tolerance for speakers than straight students.
Black students reported less tolerance than Hispanic, Asian, or white students.
Students at Ivy League schools were slightly more in favor of using violence to stop a campus speech: a total of 21% expressed some level of acceptance for violence in these cases, with 1% saying it was “always” acceptable, 3% saying “sometimes” and 17% saying “rarely,” compared with 18% overall and 15% among students in the Southeastern Conference.

One quarter of atheist students and black students expressed some level of acceptance for violence, as did 27% of LGBT students. Similarly, liberal students expressed a higher acceptance of violence. Students identifying as extremely liberal said violence to stop a speech or event from occurring on campus was “always” or “sometimes” acceptable at a rate double than students identifying as extremely conservative: 13% to 6%. More than a quarter of extremely liberal respondents said it is “rarely” acceptable, compared to 8% of extremely conservative respondents.

The difference in support for other forms of protest are even more varied:

More than 60% of extreme liberals said it’s “always” or “sometimes” acceptable to shout down a speaker; compared to 15% for extreme conservatives.
37% of Ivy League students say that shouting down a speaker is “always” or “sometimes” acceptable, compared to 26% of students not enrolled at Ivy League colleges. When it comes to removing flyers, the figures are 37% to 28%.

Almost 1 in 5 Ivy League students find it “always” or “sometimes” acceptable to block other students from entering a campus event, compared to roughly 1 in 10 of non-Ivy students.
More than 40% of college students identified race as a topic that is difficult to have an open and honest conversation about on campus, a figure that rises to 66% for black students. Similarly, 45% of students reported that they do not feel they could have an open and honest discussion about abortion on their campus. The Israeli/Palestinian conflict is particularly difficult to discuss at elite colleges in the Ivy League.

Self-expression

Fully 60% of students reported feeling that they could not express an opinion because of how students, a professor, or their administration would respond. This number is highest among “strong Republicans” (73%) and lowest among “strong Democrats” (52%). Black students are most likely to report an instance where they censored themselves (63%).

Just 15% of students reported feeling very comfortable publicly disagreeing with a professor about a controversial topic. Only 11% of female students reported this, compared to 19% of male students.

I went to college in era before social media completely took over - 2002 through 2008 or so. In my CS degree program, I took a bunch of literature, ethics, economics, and philosophy classes because they are topics I enjoy studying. The first thing I did in every single one was research the professor to figure out what their biases are, then I wrote all my papers to their biases. It earned me amazingly good grades, and resulted in my writing being critiqued fairly (which is what I was really after).

More importantly, though, I very quickly learned how to make an argument that I wasn't passionate about or didn't agree with, and it also taught me how to argue in bad faith extremely effectively. Sadly that's turned out to be a REALLY USEFUL skill for making my real arguments.

I've sort of taken the classic concern troll and turned it on its head. Essentially, when someone says something I don't agree with, I start by agreeing with them. Then I push them further and further in the direction that their poor opinion leads, until their logic breaks down, playing the part of the slightly crazy extremist. Sure they see me as somewhat of a nutter, but they also begin to see the folly of their own ideas. I've gotten at least one person to rethink their acceptance of QAnon this way.

Your best bet with professors is to publicly agree with them write what they want, get the skills you can out of the course, and continue to believe what you believe.

Shit, the number of conservatives I know who pretend to be liberals in public is astounding. Both sides of my family will talk up Bernie all day in public then tell me when I press 'em that they voted for Trump. Twice, in one case. Hell, I think if my cousin admitted honestly to his wife who he voted for, he'd be divorced. Of course it's possible he's lying to me instead of her, but it's still interesting to think about.

Eh, I'm going to have to take this one with a grain of salt until I can find time to read the report itself, but I already see an issue that is going to skew the results.

I noticed they don't mention how strong republicans would respond to Bernie here, who is considered far more left leaning than Biden. They compare Trump, who has spent the last 4 years pissing off liberals, to a VP that kind of floated along in Obama's shadow. Hopefully the actual report dove into this more to show if strong republicans would be willing to listen to Bernie as well.

Honestly they shouldn't have done the survey with any names. Too much predetermined knowledge and exposure will influence your willingness to hear someone with a potentially opposing view. I'm more liberal and talk with a lot of conservatives at work, but if I was offered a meeting with Trump I'd tell him to F off.

You also have to consider what groups have been struggling with rights. If you're part of the LGBTQ community then you're probably going to be pissed off when you hear someone try and convince others that you don't need protection against discrimination. This kind of makes the willingness to be more violent understandable for liberals despite still being well within the minority of the view when it comes to violence.

The statistics for black people are disappointing. My parents are constantly harping on me being as acceptable as possible to all people as we are already underprivileged, but then at the same time we aren’t accepting towards other groups. I don’t know what to think and just hope that as I grow older I don’t become less and less accepting of other people.

I can truly believe this since I’ve had experiences with all of these.

1.) I’ve witnessed this when I went to a black majority school and my best friend was constantly bullied and outcast for being the only 100% white kid (There was a mixed kid but he picked the black kids side) and the teachers did nothing to stop it. And another friend of mine was always getting picked on and the girl that kept messing with her tried to accuse her of racism when she told on her.

2.) I saw a study where it showed women are more likely to conform with a group than men are, so it makes sense why men were more likely to be open to someone controversial speaking rather than women. Also as a woman, who doesn’t agree with feminist, the claws and threats come out so quick.

3.) GLBT not being tolerant isn’t new, especially to a bisexual. We’re the black sheep and it’s pretty obvious, especially with lesbians (Don’t know what the deal is with that). Remember when Dave Chappell made that joke about the LGBT on a car trip, that’s exactly what the community is like.

FIRE is BY FAR not a legitimate source. It's basically a think tank that already has those views...that happens to publish a study that happens to perfectly align with those pre-existing view. Big shocker. You gotta dig into their methodology a bit before anything...because it just defies common sense that gay people value less free speech than those who literally think gay people should not exist. Like hey, we don't want some guy to talk here who literally hates our very existance... that's not anti free speech, free speech is a government thing. It's anti inflammatory speech - big difference.

Like cmon now. There is also a hugee surveying bias in the sense that everyone thinks they are for these virtuous things so of course they are going to say good things about themselves and their views as opposed to their actual actions.

Lastly, idk what this has to do with men's issues at all - you can still support mens issues and be liberal, black, LGBT, etc. Articles like this discredit everyone and just stir the pot that the MRA community is a bunch of right wing assholes.

Thats some trash statements and you know it. Go do some actual research yourself. Black people aren't just getting killed for being black. Thats absurd. Go watch some Thomas Sowell interviews or read some hard data. White men are twice as likely to die in an encounter with police as anyone else. Data from last 20-30 years proves it. If its not becoming a crime to be white why are white people in general under the most attack when you go watch any news or you go to most social media or even news sites. It simply gets dismissed as something else. You rest assured when new laws get passed to reinforce anti racism stances that those laws are inherently racist. They are aimed at specific groups. And intended to not hinder other groups.

Sociology prof ripped on e the rest do the year and just flat out called me racist when I asked a question about ideas of prison reform. Women in the class said I didn’t pull my weight in a group project causing me to get a f in it. College sucks in terms of speaking what you want.
