People who blame the victim of a crime are thoroughly retarded.

The retardation that bothers me in that thread was when the victim blaming included risk management.

Giving others advice on how to reduce their exposure to risky situations is not the same thing as telling victims that they deserved what they got because of their lack of judgment. It's frustrating how retarded people are.

Just because false rape accusations happen doesn't mean real rapes don't happen. It's hardly retarded to talk about the issue of the real rape of people.

You are comparing all rape - which most people recognize is very rarely stranger rape - to being held at gun point?

Let's split this into two analogies because there are two very different kinds of rapes.

Man: I'd like to report a mugging.

Officer: A mugging, eh? Where did it take place?

Man: I was walking by 21st and Dundritch Street and a man pulled out a gun and said, "Give me all your money."

Officer: And did you?

Man: Yes, I had no choice.

Officer: Yes, I see that. You were coerced under the threat of violence. This is a serious crime and we will look into it right away.

Man: I'd like to report a mugging.

Officer: A mugging, eh? Where did it take place?

Man: I was walking by 21st and Dundritch Street and a man asked me for money.

Officer: And did you give him money?

Man: At first I said no, but he was very insistent.

Officer: So you gave him money?

Man: Yes, I gave him my wallet.

Officer: Well, looking at a Google search of you, it says here that you are quite a generous person.

Man: Yes, I am well off and I like to help out others.

Officer: So you have a lot of money, and you walk down a poor part of town, and someone asks you for money, which you reluctantly gave them, and you want to report this as a mugging?

Man: Yes.

Now, to be clear, I don't mean to suggest that all situations go down the second way, but I wanted to use the analogy to show precisely which situations some people doubt as being actual rape. There is a huge range of situations that people call "rape", generally sitting somewhere between the two analogies I put above.

When a person is violently attacked or threatened or otherwise, it would take a really sick person to actually doubt their claim of being raped.

But, like with all crimes, we can't just throw people in jail based on the word of one person. The crime has to be provable. And so we have special people (called police) do what is called investigative work to try to determine if the accusation amounts to anything.

If a person is actually raped, what does it matter what other people say? Find the strength from within to go on, rather than depending on support from people around if the are unwilling to give it. Or find new friends. As for police, most precincts have a sexual assault unit with sympathetic female officers - this kind of situation in the link would be very, very unlikely. If it is fear of this situation that holds you back from reporting, how can you blame the rest of society - a society which has taken steps to ensure that people can feel secure in reporting a crime?
