I want to comment again with the actual details to stress just how easy it would have been to dismiss Jackie's allegations. From the Washington Post:

A name of an alleged attacker that Jackie provided to them for the first time this week, for example, turned out to be similar to the name of a student who belongs to a different fraternity, and no one by that name has been a member of Phi Kappa Psi.

Reached by phone, that man, a U-Va. graduate, said Friday that he did work at the Aquatic and Fitness Center and was familiar with Jackie’s name. He said, however, that he had never met Jackie in person and had never taken her on a date. He also said that he was not a member of Phi Kappa Psi.

Phi Kappa Psi said it did not host “a date function or social event” during...the night that a university student named Jackie alleges she was invited to a date party, lured into an upstairs room and was then ambushed and gang-raped by seven men who were rushing the fraternity.

The fraternity also said that it has reviewed the roster of employees at the university’s Aquatic and Fitness Center for 2012 and found that it does not list a member of the fraternity — a detail Jackie provided in her account to Rolling Stone and in interviews with The Washington Post — and that no member of the house matches the description detailed in the Rolling Stone account. The statement also said that the house does not have pledges during the fall semester.

“Moreover, no ritualized sexual assault is part of our pledging or initiating process,” the fraternity said. “This notion is vile, and we vehemently refute this claim.”

Jackie lied to Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone ran the story even though it was full of holes because they wanted the money and brand exposure. Now they are using empathy for real rape survivors to excuse running a bullshit story, which will only make it more difficult for real sexual assault victims to be heard/believed in the future.

And then they ran the article in a fucking national publication.

Think about that. They were sooo convinced that these young men would harm her if they knew she was telling them about the rape. So they made her story public.

As though these men, who planned and executed a ritual gang rape, would... not put two and two together? And not go after her?

If anything, if they actually decided not to contact the accused men in order to protect "Jackie", then publishing the article was an intentional act of putting her in imminent danger.

Maybe she can sue.

Completely fucked up story. Thanks to this yellow journalism, a group of innocent men were unfairly targeted and now legitimate rape victims will receive more skepticism and less sympathy. The only group I see benefiting from this story is Rolling Stone, who's got a ton of attention this last couple weeks. Fucking fantastic.

What's funny about TRP's outrage over this is that they trivialize, encourage, and apologize for rape.
