They are asking individual respondents whether those respondents thought the thing in question was acceptable - either according to the respondent's personal morality or according to a moral code to which the respondent subscribes.

I think they mean to the majority. Redditors cannot grasp the concept that morality isn't a collectivist trait.

That's why every time a controversial issue/situation comes up, some comments always say "Doesn't matter what side you're on, I think we can all agree that X." It's as if they're trying to establish common ground.

You can still hold ethical moral systems without god, although, you kind of just have to assert them.

Personally, I find lying and manipulation to be morally reprehensible, as you are manipulating the truth of what we know, and it is already soo hard to get the truth considering our flawed senses.

That and you are violating other people's autonomy.

If something gives you uncomfortable guilty feelings, it's bad and unacceptable to yourself, since we all avoid negative sensations. I personally believe that we as a species posses an instinct that reacts badly when we do something harmful to a member of our in-group (which has recently been expanded globally to all humanity), and that's what morality is. To avoid feeling morally wrong, people have historically manipulated their own minds (and others) into believing that the out-group is actually inhuman. I find the human capability for great evil, or great good, to be incredibly interesting.

It's no stretch that acceptable behavior be common knowledge to a person. Acceptable in the general sense. Whether or not your actions demean yourself, or cause harm to the people you interact with.

As for cryptochristian atheism - what exactly do you mean? That a non-specifically Christian person with strong moral beliefs is somehow Christian? Why not Hindu or Buddhist (for example)? Is it impossible to be concerned with morality without believing in God? Do you have any moral beliefs?

Or is this simply an issue with 'I believe X is immoral but I accept that others do not believe X is immoral' vs 'I believe X is immoral and anyone who doesn't also believe X is immoral is immoral/wrong/stupid?'

I've always felt that White Westerners have a very Christian worldview, most especially those are hard Atheists.

It's actually extremely pervasive and has infiltrated areas of discourse such as human nature/blank state theory, criminal justice, social policy, attitudes on self-defense and quite amusingly, how heretics are more vilified than violent criminals.

When China rules the world, this toxic mentality will be the first to be deconstructed.

I've just started reading 'Mindfulness In Plain English' and it proposes that there are levels of morality. In a nutshell:

The lowest is adherence to a set of rules and regulations laid down by somebody else. The next level of morality consists of obeying the same rules even in the absence of someone who will smack you. The third level might be better termed 'ethics'. At the level of ethics, a person does not follow hard and fat rules dictated by authority. A person chooses to follow a path dictated by mindfulness, wisdom, and compassion.

That pretty sums up my feelings on the matter. I don't think it's moral to follow orders. Or, as Mark Passio puts it, 'Order following is never a virtue.' I do think people need to have some sort of ethical code, or principals to guide them though. Unfortunately most people don't want to have to think about this and would rather just blindly follow orders.
