I (27F) met someone (30M) on my last day of vacation in Hawaii. We only spoke for a few minutes in person before exchanging numbers, then I left for home.

I've been getting to know him over the phone/via text for the last few days. I usually take people at their word. Honestly, his story sounds fishy. We don't live in the same state so it's hard for me to confirm details he gives me. His life sounds too good to be true. He brings up money constantly. Says he went to the top ivy league school and has an amazing career. Won't talk much about the details of the job or school. He comes off as insecure (constantly brings up money), emotional (literally told me 'i hope you dont hurt me'), & is easily offended.

He uses lots of flattery. He's basically professing love for me after less than a week. And tells me he wants me to come visit as soon as he gets back in town. All expenses paid, he literally doesn't know my last name.

Am I being paranoid?

Is it even worth pursuing someone who doesn't live in my state?

How could I ask him or verify info without him getting defensive?

Why would a guy get defensive if he has nothing to hide?

I dont want to outright say I think he is lying...
