So once I wrapped my head around MRP it was great. I realized that when my wife is PMSing or otherwise being a bitch/child, that I don't have to engage with her or her level. She can have fits and have her day ruined, that doesn't mean that it has to affect me at all. When I first learned this, my life changed overnight, and after a few weeks of very calmly showing her on what level I expect her to be on when she interacts with me, I was reeping big rewards. She could not understand how she was simultaneously more attracted to me, while I was refusing to give into what she wanted. There were a coupld of huge meltdowns on her part before she settled into the new paradigm.

Fast forward a couple months! I made some other posts recently detailing recent events in my household, business travel, sick kids, problems at school, wife's gramma passing away, all within a very short period. I wanted to write this post to get input on something that I believe that I have been understanding Incorrectly.

So where the kids have been involved, and where major things have happened like my wife having a death in the family, I think that I have allowed myself to relapse into wife's frame, to include yelling back and forth, justifying it to myself that these greater events require swift resolution and there is no time for gaming and STFU, and no room for OI.

I think that I have been wrong. For example:

Me: Im sorry this is happening to you. We will get through this.

Wife: I'm tired of dealing with everything by myself while you are working, its not fair!

Me: WTF you realize I am putting food on the table and making it so you don't have to work!!

Wife: FUUUCCCKKKK YOOOOU!!!!

Me: FUCK YOU!

And then this persists for a day to include sandwhiches flying across the kitchen in both directions.

Now what should have happened, was:

Me: Im sorry this is happening to you. We will get through this.

Wife: I'm tired of dealing with everything by myself while you are working, its not fair!

Me: [sound of crickets]

Wife: FUCK YOU!

Me: [sound of crickets]

Wife: (Being exhausted from being a bitch 2 hours later) Im so sorry I yelled at you like that. I am going through so much

Me: That's fine. You can make it up to me right now. [bj ensues]

It gets harder when the boys are involved. What happened:

I landed for a layover en route back home to texts that my 18mo had a seizure. I call and after initially briefing me on what all happened (my wife did a great job, calling 911, getting him taken care of), it goes right back to:

Wife: You know, Im tired of dealing with everything by myself, you're never around. I might as well be a single mom. You're never here, and you never care.

Me: Yeah you might as well be. You know when you are not stressed that you appreciate that this situation allows you to be with the boys and I don't appreciate you taking this opportunity to complain about how bad of a husband I am!

Wife: I want a divorce!

Me: I want a divorce! (and then we are arguing most of the day)

What should have happened:

Wife: You know, Im tired of dealing with everything by myself, you're never around. I might as well be a single mom. You're never here, and you never care.

Me: You'll get over it

Wife: I want a divorce!

Me: Call me back if you have an update on our son. Talk to you later [hang up. wait for 20 angry texts that the marriage is over and she hates me (btw: its not, and she doesn't). Then wait two more hours for an apology and a comfort test vice shit test]

So those are examples. In the past, I made my best gains in the household, by not being sucked into the drama she tries to create, but when the kids are involved, I've let myself think that I need to be more of a presence, even though that presence is a weak-ass-dude. Its harder because my wife's accusations become that I am a shitty dad, or she plays a game where she waits for me to call and ask for the information (not during emergencies, but after), and she makes giving me the information a lecture on how terrible I am.

Summary:, when I am owning my shit and being a leader, my wife does not act this way, but when she is stressed/frustrated, she is very prone to getting very angry at me and blaming me fore everything. When I am in the right mindset, and the situation is petty, it is not hard to shut her down. But recently, when major events have occurred, or health/safety of the children are concerned, I have been falling hard for my wife's manipulation into the chaos and drama of her hamster. Have you guys noted a similar distinction in the difficulty of navigating shit tests during periods of high stress, versus run of the mill shit tests of wife being bratty? Furthermore, have you made any conclusion beyond the same rules apply regardless of the gravity of the scenario. Wife needs to act like an adult, and being told that you are a shitty dad during an emergency is just another shit-test and needs to be treated like one, while I keep the mindset and wherewithal that I am dealing with the problem, not my wife's perturbed assessment of it. Thanks!
