As a CSCS I cringe when I hear advice that you lift five times a week, etc.

There are dozens of systems for working out. Most of them do work SOME. They all work SOME because your body responds to the work out stimulus as much as it can.

The workout techniques are all limited by your genetic potential to develop muscle. Arnold Schwarzenegger is an example of someone with huge potential AND the willingness to work to achieve. Most of us don't have this huge potential, but you are likely able to develop the musculature that makes you respect yourself and improves your SMV.

The results you get are also limited by the fact that you are weaker after every work out. You only gain muscle during the recovery period. So if you work out every day, you only let your body grow muscle for 24 hours before you "knock" it back again.

If you aren't making progress gaining strength with your work technique, wait longer between workouts. As your workouts get more intense, you need more recovery time.
