That article compares a self-reporting survey BJS survey on sexual abuse in prison and jails with results from the NCVS. NCVS is criticised for underreporting the prevalence of rape due to a number of methodological reasons. Which means it also underreport the prevalence of male rape victims. However the proposed changes by The National Research Council are only directed at making sure more female vicitms are counted. Read more about that in a blog post of mine here

BJS statistics on prison rape counts sexual abuse and doesn't use rape as a category making it even more wrong to compare those two numbers. Some interesting things about who exactly is the perpetrators of sexual abuse against incarcerated people can be read in a blog post of mine here

NISVS 2010 Report from the CDC have found a much higher prevalence rate of rape than NCVS and due to that there is an effort in making methodological changes to how NCVS measure rape.

Comparing the numbers for rape from NISVS 2010 (1,270,000 female vicitms in the last 12 months) it appears that women are raped at much larger numbers than men (216,000 assaulted in a year (2008) in prison/jail). But let's not forget the 1,670,000 men who in the NISVS 2010 reported being made to penetrate someone else (in other words: were made to have unconsensual oral, vaginal or anal intercourse) we find that the claim in the headline still holds or isn't far off the mark.

Oversimplified. Misleading, and wrong.

Rape != sexual assault. Completely different legal terms. Comparing them will lead to skewed numbers as rape is much less common than the broader term "sexual assault".

It's estimated that only 16% rape cases are reported by women, so this will skew the numbers.

According to the US Bureau of Justice Statistics, 90% of rape victim are women, and 10% are men.

The article cites an article that states that women in prison were more likely to be sexually assaulted by each other than men. The numbers it takes from the article are not used correctly.

Granted women hold 5% of the prison population, and men hold the other 95%, but women are four times as likely to be sexually abused in a prison environment, making .35% of women being sexually assaulted part of the total prison population and 1.6% of men being sexually assaulted as part of the total prison population. The distance is a lot closer than the article would suggest, taking a 20:1 ratio and not accounting for the difference in both gender populations and trying to take into account the occurence of rape, rather than the proportion of rape, is misleading and fallacious

The 200,000 number that the article cites says "People" sexually abused, not "Men" sexually abused, as it encompasses both genders.

Allen J. Beck, the senior BJS statistician who has been the lead author on all of these studies, tells us the new findings indicate that nearly 200,000 people were sexually abused in American detention facilities in 2011.

Can we keep the bullshit out of this subreddit? Rape is a problem for men, but it is also a problem for women, and much moreso. The court system and false rape accusations are what this subreddit should focus on, not trying to out-victim women by citing straight up fucking lies from The Daily Mail.

Question... does it really matter how many there are? 1%, 5%, 30%, 90% , to me even 1 is too many.

Should humans not be helped when in need? I think this is the more relevant point to fight for, because victims of violent crimes should be able to receive support, regardless of how many others underwent the same ordeal.
