Amelia Earhart: Feminist hero or an aviation fraud?

I feel vindicated reading that, and for the dumbest reason.
In elementary school, I was made to do a report on Earhart. I had chosen Henri Cartier-Bresson, but she nixed that with the statement that I should do a report on a woman. I think it was more about what materials she had in class (or else keeping me off of the familiar topic of photography,) because when I asked about doing one on Dorothea Lange, she nixed that idea, too.

Even using materials which put the best possible spin on Earhart's career, I wasn't impressed with her as a female pioneer of anything. My report centered on questioning why she was remarkable if everything she did had been done before. I admit that my negativity was partly due to resentment at having been boxed into the research of an unwanted subject, but nothing I wrote was unsupported by the materials I'd been given.

I received an "E" (which at the time was the elementary equivalent of an "F," a failing grade. There was no reason listed except that the teacher disagreed with me that Earhart was not great or original.

That was my first experience with getting a low grade on anything because the teacher disagreed with my opinion, rather than the criteria on which she'd stated she'd be grading the paper (grammar, sentence structure, spelling, and other technical factors.)

More like willfully ignorant of how her aircraft operated, and she probably died because of it.

Slandering Amelia Earhart has nothing to do with helping men.

edit: Slander was not the word I should have used, the article was belittling but appears accurate. How about "casting aspersions"? Learn a word a day they say.

Amelia Earhart always pissed me off because the only reason she's famous is because she's a woman. She did absolutely nothing, she wasn't the first person to do anything new or original, she was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic but then when she tried to go over the Pacific solo, which no one has ever done, she failed and died.
