To be honest I can't say for sure, but by my understanding the females were just playing the way they always did regardless of if it was mixed or not (the males probably the same).

The fact it was hockey probably played the biggest part because it is a lot easier to hurt someone with your aggressiveness when you have a 4ft long piece of wood in your hands regardless of your physical capabilities.

No doubt in some kind of fitness/strength comparison some or many of the ladies would have been classed as "weaker" than my dad (as would a fair few of the men) but aside from things like shoulder barging that kind of direct strength wouldn't play a part. Wrapping a stick round someones ankle will do some damage even if a "weaker" person does it.

Things like aggression and determination are most likely totally equal regardless and I don't think sex would really play a part, it is just that in sports where direct physical match ups are more common if a "average" male shows extra aggression and physicality there will be a greater result on an opponent than if an "average" female did the same to the same opponent.

So for example mixed rugby might show a very big gulf even if all the players were well above average for their sex (though even then skill does play a large part and a physically weaker player can use skills to rebalance things a bit), but the likes of football, hockey, fencing and such where the physical matchups are less direct and more to do with stamina and skill I don't see any reason to look down upon mixing the sexes.

**just as an aside, in my posts hockey = "field" hockey, and football = football of the non-american variety. Though with the exception of the punchups (and even those do happen on the grass version from time to time) hockey and ice hockey are pretty comparable when it comes to commenting on player aggression, physicality, skill and direct strength against opponents.

It sounds to me like the problem isn't practice time but game time. Practice is all well and good, but you can't really truly replicate game situations in practice for any sport. And this guy seems to be saying that the girls, with the ability to play in 2 leagues get twice the game time as the boys, so they can develop their skills and game-awareness better.

And like the coach is quoted as saying, it's not that they don't want the girls there, it's the inequality of the situation. Personally I'd think the best option would be to create a boys league so there is boys, girls, and coed. Then if you could somehow keep the emphasis on the coed league (make it the premier league so to speak), you could guarantee the boys and girls would get equally good competition AND time to develop their skills.

Girls will never be able to compete with boys at physical sports after puberty. This means that most attention in the media will go to male competitions. Why would you watch the worse female competition if you can watch the male competition as well? Despite continuous efforts to increase attention to female sports they are not nearly as popular as there male counterparts. This is not discrimination. People just want to see the best of the best. And if best are males everybody will watch male sports.

This means less ettention to female sports so less girls become sport fans and have female sport role models. They can't become superstars and don't get nearly as much regocnition as males, so they miss that incentive as well. This might not be fair but there is really no way to change this. Girls are also on average less competitive/more risk aversive. This makes girls less inclined to pick up a sport and when they do are less inclined to sacrifice spare time to train and try to become better.

For some reason this problem is the biggest with teamsports. Female tennis, ice skating or atletics are pretty popular here in the Netherlands but female soccer, the biggest sport in the Netherlands, is basicly non-existant.

A very interesting read is this article called the grandmaster experiment. It's about a mathematician who wanted to prove that talent didn't excist. When his daughter showed interest in chess at a young age he thought it would be the perfect testing field for his theory. At age 21 his daughter became the first female Grandmaster. She also had 2 younger sister who also became grandmasters at even younger ages. And they were at one point 3 of the 11 female Grandmasters of the 950 Grandmasters in the world. An interesting fact is that they always competed against males and not in the sheltered environment of the female competition. Because, let's face it, chess is not the most physical sport in the world.
