i'd ignore the captain and take care of my own while trying to help as many others as reasonably possible. and would hope such an idiotic captain honored maritime tradition of going down with the ship.

There is absolutely no reason to let women go first! That is sexist nonsense and it has no place in modern society.

I would be happy to point this out to the captain and crew after I recovered from tripping and falling into the first available lifeboat.

yeah, I'd shut the captain up about trying to figure out who was more important to save, and get on a lifeboat. In reality, ships are supposed to have enough capacity of lifeboats/liferafts to handle 120% of the capacity of the ship, on either side of the ship. So this isn't the Titanic, there's enough lifeboats and liferafts. Such a distinction is unnecessary.

If there are enough lifeboats and enough time to board everyone, just do whatever the crew is asking. Trying to argue over procedure would just hold things up and put everyone at risk.

If it looks like there's not enough boats or not enough time to board everyone, I would not board a boat until women and children were safe. I would prefer to spend my time attempting to improve rafts to save more people (and possibly myself) than fighting for a place on a boat so I can float away on it and watch other people drown.
