I think that, while these pageants, the show, and the parents featured on the show, are all disgusting and horrible parents IN THIS REGARD, it's important to watch the whole video and listen to the legal analysis at the end. If the mother provides all the child needs, but pushes her into pageants, is that a bad thing? Of course. Is it damaging enough to remove the child from the only home she's known and place her with her (reportedly absentee) father? No, in my opinion.

And if the father were to receive custody, it then raises the idea that a mother could have a son removed from a father's custody for allowing him to play Dungeons and Dragons ("it's immoral and teaches satanism!"), or for playing pee wee football ("my baby is far to young to be tackled by other boys!"). Basically, if the child in this case is removed from the mothers custody, we get onto the slippery legal slope of designating which activities are acceptable and which aren't. And look how well we've done on that one with those choices in the past.

Ninja edit: And just because this is /r/MensRights, I would feel the same way no matter who was fighting whom for custody. This isn't, in my view, a mens vs womens rights issue, so much as a "freedom to raise your children as you see fit" issue.

These children are participants in a strange kind of pornography where the sexualization of infants is made normal and because it is endorsed by women, socially acceptable. If a man did this to his daughter, he'd be in jail for the rest of his life.

I think its a really pathetic excuse for a tv show and anyone putting their children through all that deserves to have them removed from their care. Toddlers should not be getting fake tans or waxing. they should be eating worms in the garden or trying to get horsy rides from the family dog.

I've never met some one who thought anything of this show other than disgusting and exploitation. I don't even know why it is still being produced.

Kudos for the father though, he was definitely in the right. Saved his daughter from a whole lot of heart ache.

I haven't seen the show so I can't comment on that. But even if the psychologist agrees it's very unlikely the Judge will grant full custody to the father.

I am strongly opposed to this ruling. The mom did not break any laws and acted in a cultural excepted way. Calling mainstream practices abuse is an absurd breach of power.

I force my mom to change the channel when I see that she's watching it, I tell her that it is exploitation and wrong. Little girls should not be wearing make-up until at least puberty, they should feel pretty without make-up.

Also, if you have a girl that is 13 years old or less, for the love of God please don't let her wear short shorts. There is no reason for a preteen to be showing off her "ass" and "legs" plan and simple.

While the costume was a poor choice, I don't think mom should lose custody over this. Pretty soon, every parent is going to risk losing custody of their kids for allowing them to drink a pepsi (a very sugary drink that provides no health benefits). Where does it stop. Everyone, makes mistakes. I suspect this little girl will be fine and suffered no emotional or other consequences.
