Example of this already happening: the tender years doctrine. The presumption that fathers should get custody of children in the event of divorce was wrong. A push for equality would have been to simply erase that presumption. Instead, a feminist campaign to presume mothers should get custody of children was successful, which is one of the causes of the inequality against fathers that egalitarians and MRAs are fighting today.

The big secret. Marxists always will win the "gender argument." That is because the notion of "gender" is specious. The male and female sexes are different. We are all a mix of nature and nurture. As long as we continue to use the social constructionist term "gender" instead of "sex" as in "male sex" and "female sex" we will continue to be run in circles by the gender maniacs (not the same thing as "sex maniacs," but just as imbalanced and obsessive).

Unquestionably yes. It's primarily gender roles that cause sexist oppression and so anytime you present one set of "gender specific" attributes as being better than the other, you will necessarily oppress the members of that other gender. So the idea that women just love their kids more, they are more emotionally available naturally (as opposed to due to socialization), etc is just as oppressing as the idea that men are the natural leaders.

This is a great discussion in SRSD about this very topic. Particularly interesting is a comment thread about two primitive societies in which women were held in higher regards than men. You guessed it, in those societies men were undervalued and heavily oppressed.

The answer isn't that men and women are so distinctly different creatures with mutually exclusive natural and inborn sets of characteristics that makes one the winner and one the loser. The answer is to stop trying to gender police and shame those who don't fit whatever mold the powers that be are trying to force on us.
