That word is thrown around like antisemitism. It actually exists but calling every little thing that you don't like bigotry only serves to make the word meaningless.

I keep saying it - it is about power. The word "misogyny" has power because it invokes a response from people. Just like the word rape - why are their false accusations of rape? Because the word "rape" actually contains power. Using these words gives the utterer a power of support, the power of being a victim in a highly liberal society. (As a liberal, I still recognize this, even if it is used to criticize a view I often identify with.)

Like some others said, it's pretty much a catch-all. You say anything in support of a man, and you're a misogynist. It's kinda like the whole issue with racism. "Well, there are higher drop-out rates in southern Georgia, especially in THIS race." "OMG you're saying this race is dumb, your racist!"

I'd say that this is an atypical response, but I lived I southern Georgia for five years. It's sooooo common -_-

The word misogynist is thrown around in this subreddit all the time for what is actually just plain stereotyping and sexism.

We need to counter the concern trolls by correcting their definitions.

Go to any post in /r/funny or /r/adviceanimals that has anything to do with women and watch as people throw the word around like monkeys throw feces. It's irritating.

It is misused. I've convinced SRS-level feminists that they misused it before so I think it's misused because of intellectual laziness. The intent is to say that the person's actions or beliefs hurt women in some way perceived as unjust. The actual word used is just chosen because it's effective at shaming and garners public support easily.

I was planning on making a blog post about this very thing a few days ago. You are exactly correct, people throw the word around and any criticism (many times don't even have to do or say anything, just be born a male) you're instantly called a misogynist. It's a way for them to silence dissent and instantly end the argument so it looks like they won.

'Misogyny' is what the feminists use to gain leverage over any argument (since they hardly have one) or to get a piece of legislature passed in their favor. You disagree with me? Misogynist. You don't believe VAWA is 100% righteous? Misogynist. It is a shame tactic, just like "you can't get a gf" or "you're just bitter/angry", only more 'politically-correct'. In reality, Western women experience about as much 'misogyny' in their daily lives as Western men experience vaginitis.

Some people will also use the word misogyny in reference to anything that is pro-men's rights or that's just not female-centered. It's almost like they see how well an opinion agrees with feminism as the only valid criteria for gender-related issues, without much regard for men. Oh wait, there are quite a few people who really are like that!

It's a diversion tactic. It takes the focus off the topic. Most people who cry "misogynist" might as well be saying, "I don't care what you have to say, I just want you to stop talking about this so I can continue to believe what I want to believe".

Give it a few years, my completely baseless prediction is that the word "misogyny" will evolve from a pejorative into a compliment something like "sick" or "phat".

The word has been so broadly redefined as to be useless. Walking into a gym and blowing some women away is misogyny, but apparently so is looking at wet t-shirt contests or producing comic books about some super heroines' personal lives. This Marvel Divas cover for example, was labeled misogynist...

It's the same tactic for any social issue. It's a simple and lazy way to discredit people or opinions that you don't like. Racist, misogynist, etc. They're used so much that they've become practically meaningless.

Plus I feel like distrust of the feminist movement in general is waning, and people are more aware of inequalities for all. This just means they have to up the ante and spew more vitriol.
