First Magic: the Gathering and now League of Legends? These debates are popping up everywhere lately, especially in the "gaming community". Is this a good sign?

I honestly don't understand what she is talking about. Yeah, there is some sexism here and there, but the reason for that is because the people saying it know it will piss you off. People on games make fun of you for anything about you. But also I don't even know what she's talking about. In most games, first off, girls often CHOOSE the support classes (I play a lot of games like WoW and that is more than 75% of the women i know on those games.) often girls even get special treatment because they're a girl. I've lost out on gear pieces in wow because the leader gave it to a girl doing A LOT worse than me.

I don't really get where girls are coming from when they say that they are discriminated against when gaming. The two games that occupy the majority of my time are StarCraft 2 and EverQuest 2.

In SC2 all opponents are anonymous (in ladder play anyways) so gender is never an issue. There aren't any pro female gamers that I am aware of, so I am not entirely sure what to make of that situation. I do know that the females in the community who report on the game or do commentary are generally judged on their merit (my observation).

My raiding guild in EQ2 is about 1/4 female. The girls do all play support classes, but that is 100% their choice. They are allowed to play any class they want, it just so happens that all of their mains are support classes. When actually playing the game no one cares that these people are girls. They are players who do their jobs in raid very well, they also happen to be female.

Basically, I have never known anyone outside of the 13yo Xbox crowd to discriminate against females when gaming. Maybe the primary games that I play just happen to have the most mature communities out there, but I doubt it considering we have our fair share of idiots.

There might be something to fact that girls in video games are almost always displayed as impossibly beautiful and feminine, but you have to remember that guys in these same games are always displayed as impossible handsome and masculine. At the end of the day you have to remember that the primary consumer of video games are males in their late teens and early twenties (IIRC), so naturally the artwork in these games is going to appeal to this crowd.

I've heard the argument that these male characters still play into male fantasies of being powerful, but I really don't buy into it. The characters are still considered attractive to women (AFAIK) and regardless of who finds them attractive, the bodies of these men are still largely unattainable. I have also heard from many girls who like playing these beautiful characters because they like imagining themselves as these impossibly beautiful girls.

You could probably draw a compassion to how daytime TV primarily depicts men as bumbling buffoons while the women are all smart, independent, and beautiful. In this case the primary consumers are women so the TV execs are going to tailor their product to their tastes.

In a perfect world all of these stereotypes would not exist, but we don't live in a perfect world. I do think these discussions are a good thing as they are bringing light to some of the issues. Hopefully people will see that the people who make these games (and TV shows) are doing nothing more than catering to their target audience.

If they were just a clan where they wouldn't be competing for money or in tournaments than i would agree with you. A group of people can get together and discriminate all they like but when money and sponsors are involved, which would is needed to compete i any eSport, a clan can't go around being sexist. If they wanted to be a group of people that just play the game together, like a wow guild, it wouldn't matter but a LoL team that tries to play competitively can't discriminate.

Yep. Be "sexist" all you want if there's no prize, but when money's involved, you better let some women cling on, whether or not they are any good! By the way, girls-only teams are never mentioned as sexist. Interesting...

I certainly think this is great news. It shows that our ideology is branching out and reaching others. I think it also shows that other men feel the same way as us but don't know about our movement.

Are you trying to bait? How does an -inclusive- game clan that focuses on girls infringe on your ability to play the game?
