I think this bit is even worse:

1 in 3 insisted on something akin to a strict liability standard for the perpetrator, saying that put-downs and criticisms that did not hurt the other person’s feelings nonetheless should be considered domestic violence, a sentiment echoed by many women in the focus groups. To these women, verbal battery is a gateway to physical harm and should not be dismissed.

So not only do they want to criminalize hurting someone's feelings...but they literally want to regulate speech on the off chance that little miss paper-skin could possibly have hurt feelings.

The fucked up thing is that, if you applied this evenly to men and women, you'd probably criminalize the majority of relationships. You say my favorite shirt makes me look like an idiot? DOMESTIC VIOLENCE! You said I shouldn't wear sandals because my feet were ugly? DOMESTIC VIOLENCE! You say I mowed the lawn like a jackass? DOMESTIC VIOLENCE! You freaked out over a ring on the coffee table? DOMESTIC VIOLENCE!!!!

What the fuck is wrong with these people? They're just words. They may hurt your feelings, but you don't have a right to freedom from hurt feelings. Grow the fuck up.

Domestic abuse would be a better term than domestic violence. Verbal abuse is abuse; violence denotes physical force.

Actually, it obviously would be. So how many of those ladies ever say 'we have to talk' and then follow it up with a string of things they feel their partners have to change about themselves?

And this is how violence turns to water and washes over the world. Definitions get spread out, people are told what is or isn't violence based on gender or possibility to harm. Soon stoicism will be problematic and be labeled as emotional abuse which will then be shifted to domestic abuse.

Verbal abuse maybe, but domestic violence? I'm sure these same women think that "he doesn't listen to me when I talk about my feelings" is some form of abuse too. I hope these women are single and will have no one but half a dozen or more cats in their lives.
