What it really comes down to, if you look directly at the seedy underbelly - is that the government doesn't want to pay to support divorced women. So they foster a system where they make the men do it instead.

There are some exceptions where it flips as there are a few rare examples of women paying alimony to men. In general though, the system is basically one of the government forcing men to pay for women/children so that the government doesn't have to.

Its meant to act as severance pay for the full time homemaker and mother with no real current life skills. The theory is that the women couldn't ever make it on her own. I think it should end with the majority of the kids personally, but the courts apparently see it different.

The voters decreed that people should be "supported" to some standard of living and the government, not wanting to impose the true cost of said laws on the taxpayers, decided to force an individual to fund the lifestyle of the ex-spouse.

Alimoney is a byproduct of marriage 1.0. Marriage 1.0 was where women traded their domestic and reproductive potential in exchange for men's resource potential and protection. It was also called coverture, which meant basically that the man covered or was responsible for the woman and in exchange she did small tasks and raised children and he owned her sexuality. Today feminists want to claim that men used women as chattel but this isn't true, it was a better deal for women at the time because if they couldn't find a man to sell/trade their sexuality to (don't forget that most women are submissive and actually want this to some degree) then they had to live life just like men, which meant to work in shitty conditions which many women did actually do...the origin of the word spinser comes from spinning cotton or wool into yarn and fabric because this was a time intensive but relatively easy job that women could do, easier than making horse shoes for example.

So, basically women traded their sexuality for mens resources. Then feminists came along and created ideas like marital rape and claimed they wanted to be liberated from the drudgery of boredom created with new inventions meant to help women in the domestic sphere like washing machines and dishwashers and so on. This created marriage 2.0, where a woman felt entitled to the resources of a former husband without having to uphold any of her side of the contract/marriage equation. So men pay and get sexual access and then they divorce and still pay.

As far as how it is calculated, I don't think there is a hard and fast rule. I know that it is calculated based on "the lifestyle" the former wife has become accustomed to, so? If she marries a billionaire and is used to spending 1k a week then she gets that, if she has a good lawyer.

It is per statute in the applicable state family code. Some states have it. Some states do not.
