It probably also makes males doing the gazing lose math ability too. Its called "being distracted". Whether its by looking at women, or being looked at by men, its still something you're paying attention to that isn't the task.

If anything, I should think the objectifying gaze harms men, whose attention is shifted from something of consequence to some moderately attractive breasts. After all, reduced attention tends to translate into reduced performance.

I wouldn't even use the word empowered as if its really bad and needs to be overcome.

First the study only used female participants. The same would probably happen to men.

Secondly sexuality is usually a distraction. I can't remember the study, but I remember it saying that talking to a beautiful girls and flirting distracted boys on some mental test later on. Don't we just blame the person effected, it is their mind.

The important part to the study is that it wasn't just the woman. It was only distracting to the men when she dressed in a more provocative way. When she was dressed in plain clothing LIKE MEN ARE the men did fine understanding the news, and better than the women. (Interestingly women paid slightly more attention when the women was not dressed plainly which may tell who is actually more sexual hint hint).

To ignore something like this but freak out over a "distracting" glare shows something really wrong with sexual politics. The women in the study deliberately dressed in a way men don't and used colors and more exposure of her body to get attention. Yet somehow the person who distracts that way is less culpable...

How can revealing more of your body and using bright colors to distract be OK but a glad is wrong?!?

I see much more agency in the former yet women can't be held responsible for anything that that a woman showing half her breast means nothing but a person glaring is so wrong... (once again its only men's sexuality being targeted)

This whole "objectifying gaze" seems likely to be explained by stereotype threat. Simply reminding people that they're part of a stereotyped group can lead them to conforming to the stereotype. It's been demonstrated with men, women, and a whole slew of different races. So, it makes sense that if you remind women that they're WOMEN right before a math test then it is likely to have a negative effect. This isn't really new, and the idea that it's somehow harassment is laughable.
