The DPP said: "The obvious distinction we want to explore is between a retraction of a rape allegation that was false and malicious, which would almost certainly be prosecuted, and a retraction made by a complainant who may have been under pressure, or in an abusive relationship, where it may not be appropriate to prosecute."

Actually, this seems sensible enough to me. It is not just in the case of rape accusations that the accuser may be under pressure to recant their testimony under threat of harm or violence. Look what happens to people who testify against the mob, for instance. Their life expectancy isn't very high, witness protection programs notwithstanding. The investigator always needs to try to understand the motivations of the accuser, whether the accusation be true or false.

So let me get this straight... A woman makes a false rape accusation, right? The man's life is basically ruined. And we shouldn't treat them like they commit a serious crime if they have had a troubled past?

The main thing that bugs me about this: many men per year in the UK have their life ruined by false accusations of rape, nothing is done. One woman gets sent to prison after being harassed into dropping a rape charge, a whole new procedure for prosecuting false rape accusers is introduced.

In addition to this, this bit scared me:

Mr Starmer announced the launch of a consultation exercise in the new year on the factors to consider before bringing a prosecution for perverting the course of justice, which will involve charities and special interest groups.

Translation: Women's groups will determine whether a woman can be sent to trial for making false rape accusations. That won't be at all biased...

The woman jailed for recanting was not jailed for making a false accusation, she was jailed for making a false retraction. There was ample proof that she had been pressured by the man and his family.

Just to get that straight.

There's nothing wrong with making sure that the retraction of a rape claim is actually because it's a false accusation and not because a rape victim has been threatened or pressured into falsely retracting like that woman was.

Just amazing. Tell me there isn't special treatment given to women in the criminal justice system. In Western society, we assume a man is responsible for his actions. Women on the other hand, we assume a man is responsible for her actions.

Give me fucking a fucking break.

Sorry but still calling them victims after retracting a claim skews public opinion. They are suspects, defendants or pushing it potential victims by assuming that someone who has knowingly lied to the court at least once is a victim you tend to look for evidence to prove this.
