Even in 2013 I guess men are obligated to put themselves in danger to protect women. Tell me...what are women obligated to do for men in this modern age?

But...but... those poor princesses! :((((

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points27 points 16 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Wow, those are.....weird. I think their message is lost in the sheer confusion of trying to figure out WTH is happening.

[–]MRRoberts 8 points9 points10 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

agreed. my main complaint is that they aren't effective ads, since i have only a very loose idea what the images are conveying.

I also totally "What the heck"ed.

Mommies read stories to children. And daddies shoot mommies.

Everyone knows this

[–]Trashie 13 points14 points15 points 16 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This is the reason why I refuse to support Amnesty, it's such a pity because overall it is a great organisation that does important work. The amnesty people in western countries need something better to concentrate on.

No. The problem is not that it isn't addressing violence against men.

Imagine a series of PSAs regarding theft or some such. In every poster, the person stealing is depicted as a black guy. The implication would be "only blacks steal stuff."

That is the problem here. The posters imply "Fathers are the only family member committing domestic violence." Just as if my example wouldn't cause any fuss had the criminals been of varying races, nobody would care about these if one had the words 'mommy' and 'daddy' switched.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Damn straight. I don't think it's very manly to search out ways in which we might potentially be victimized by some slight.

[–]numb3rb0y 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Except it's not just a poster; Amnesty International pumps a hell of a lot of its funding into the Stop Violence Against Women campaign. Regardless of the good they do, I can't in good conscience call them a "human rights organisation" when they selectively discriminate against half the human race with one of their biggest causes. It is sexist, and while they have every right to be sexist, I stopped supporting them for that reason and I'd recommend anyone else do too. The ends don't justify the means.

[–]danpilon 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Good luck finding a poster or anything really that has the roles reversed.

[–]databank01 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree with you on this point, that there should be similar posters with the genders reversed. But not the same quantity of publicity is warranted. Even assuming that a lot of domestic violence by women is not reported, you cannot disagree that just by numbers domestic violence by men is a bigger problem. Logical to assume that it would be given more attention, I just don't think it should be given all the attention.

[–]YesImSardonic 0 points1 point2 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

you cannot disagree that just by numbers domestic violence by men is a bigger problem.

You can if you cite that Canadian study done a few years back, which said that, among those reporting, females initiated violence far more often, and were far more likely to use weapons.

[–]Feckless 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The problem is that "violence against men" simply gets no airtime and those ads also reinforce the idea that men can only be perpetrators.

[–]zombiecyborghitler 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

These play to an immature and juvenile mindset. Adults of any gender would question these. Overkill?

[–]A_for_Anonymous 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Some adults created these, and some adults agree to these. Women are cool to kids (kids being the untouchable element in our society for which we're allowed to take out freedom, censor, and so on). Men are evil and kill women.

[–]zombiecyborghitler 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men are evil and kill women. See , if it wasnt for that.

[–]kragshot 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

How dare these bastards pervert fairy tales in order to promote their agenda.

[–]dakboy 12 points13 points14 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah! That's Disney's job!

[–]A_for_Anonymous 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

These fairy tales do use girls in helpless positions because everyone emphatizes more with girls.

The wolf ate the girl? Poor thing.

The wolf ate the guy? Lol, loser. Get a real man you idiots.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I don't know, should they ignore the statistics because its impolite to call attention to the higher incidence of women killed/severely beaten in domestic disputes? I mean, should we just be PC about it and pretend the problem doesn't exist?

I dunno, I think the assumption that men are inherently abusive (or perverted) is incredibly harmful..but there is a problem with DV

[–]Kuonji[S] 10 points11 points12 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

CDC Stats:

Each year, women experience about 4.8 million intimate partner related physical assaults and rapes. Men are the victims of about 2.9 million intimate partner related physical assaults.1

More? Yes. Certainly not insignificant, though. I saw 2 ads. Both talked about 'daddy'. I'd love to see one from them about 'mommy'.

Men are victims of violence more than women are.

[–]databank01 0 points1 point2 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I am gonna go out on a limb and say that that someone or something did not have a vagina.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 16 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well, if you go to trashy bars the likelihood you'll meet trashy people (of both sexes) goes up.

[–]Trashie 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And a trashy bar it was! ;)

But the difference between High-end clubs and the trashy bars is not that big when it comes to threats and violence. And the cases are very common, I'm even willing to say that they are more common than domestic violence cases.

Shoulden't I be able to go out and have a good time without being threatened? Even if I'm male and can defend myself? Isen't that a human right that Amnesty should fight for as well?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, there's a difference between public and private violence - public violence has witnesses and authorities can become involved very quickly, private violence, however, is more insidious and can be harder to detect let alone help stop.

[–]A_for_Anonymous 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's International Amnesty for you.

[–]reddeb 0 points1 point2 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Um. I don't get it.
