I don't think she was talking about porn here (although she was very much against porn), I think her point was that the simple act of sex requires a passive (vagina) and an active (penis) component. One goes inside the other. That's just a simple fact of biology, which I think is why she was saying that hetero sex "may be immune to reform".

If it's an "offensive anti-male quote" you're after, she does supply us with the rather more unequivocal

"Intercourse is the pure, sterile, formal expression of men's contempt for women".

As for your other question, I'd say that some porn is degrading to women, some isn't. There's so many different types of porn, with pretty much all tastes catered to that you really can't make a blanket statement like that, even if you agree with Dworkin's premise that heterosexuality in general degrades women, simply because not all porn is hertero.

No more than romance novels are degrading to modern men....

The trouble with pornography is not within the thing itself, but in the things that surround it. Porn films and magazines are vehicles of fantasy. The men who buy porn are indulging in a fantasy. The problem is that some men have trouble separating fantasy from reality.

An example is in imagined durations of sexual activity. Because of editing, a man in a porn film appears to have herculean reserves of endurance, able to go at it for a very long period of time. Therefore, men who observe these films, feel themselves lessened because they can't go as long as their favorite male porn star.

Another example often cited by feminists is based around the idea that the women in the movies are "unrealistically promiscuous" and men get wrong ideas about women because of how they characterize the women in these films.

I question that idea because it propagates the myth that claims that women do not enjoy sex. Women enjoy sex and they enjoy being thought of as "sexy." The problem is that they enjoy all of these things only with men who they are attracted to. If you are not one of those men, then there is a problem called "unwelcome attention." With that being said, if a given woman does not show any interest in you within the first stage of your encounter with her, the best thing you can do is to leave her alone as quickly as possible.

But to continue, I completely disagree with the idea that pornography as a whole is degrading to women. There are some genres and given films that are degrading to women, as well as men, but the genre as it exists today caters to all genres and orientations.

You make some very good points, and I certainly appreciated a legitimate discussion as a change of pace in these comments.

The issues that porn raises for men in terms of performance are interesting. I recently read in an IAMA thread about how a common trick when filming porn is to film the cumshot first, then the rest of the fucking, so it's all really a trick, and that porn stars don't fuck any longer than the rest of us.

I do think porn has fundamentally changed to be more inclusive since Dworkin's writings, that there are certainly more genres that are not degrading to anyone.

I still think that some of the most dominant and visible kinds of porn, and definitely the kind that Dworkin rails against, are things that might bare titles like YOUNG SLUTS CHOKING ON MASSIVE COCKS which can hardly be described as anything but intense objectification of women as purely sexual objects to be used. As you say, porn is largely about indulging a fantasy, but that these sort of violent sexual acts are fantasized can be problematic. These sorts of negative views of sex cast it wrongly as something you do to a person, not something you do with a person, so I can see why Dworkin makes some of the conclusions she makes, but I don't the extreme extent to which she takes them.

I think it's the exact opposite, actually. It's a slippery slope for one to identify as feminist because it immediately causes people to assume that you're a hairy, fanatical lesbian wielding a machete to castrate poor, unassuming men.

In reality, many more people identify with feminist beliefs than are willing to label themselves as feminist, for this exact misconception. Feminism is by and large not about limiting choices for men, it's about allowing choice for women. People just have these kinds of ridiculous assumptions about it based on the opinions of a few crazies.

I admit to this personal bias against the Men's Rights movement, myself. I've read a lot of misogynist hate speech that purports to be from those who identify with Men's Rights; for that reason, I've come to identify the Men's Rights movement as misogynistic. Is that what Men's Rights is really about? I hope not. I'd hope it's about equality for men as well as women (although, that ideology is basically the crux of feminism).

When it comes down to it, misogyny and misandry are the same problem, produced by the same type of person.

That is quite the insight! I'd not thought to put it that way, I think I may use that in the future, if you don't mind.

While there is misandry in the most radical of feminisms, I don't think that most people perceive the whole of feminism as a misandrist movement. I do think that as a fledgling movement, Mens Rights ought to be more careful about phrasing things in a possibly misogynist way (as I felt the post title could be construed), as there are many who already dismiss the movement as a bunch of misogynist rape-apologists based some of the loudest and most obnoxious voices. We need to make every effort to be above that sort of bullshit if we want our issues to be taken seriously.
