I can see why some people may consider it sexist, but I have heard it used as a gender-neutral term and I think most people would treat it as such. Calling it sexist seems incredibly petty.

I can remember 40 years ago, males were referred to as guys and females were referred to as gals. A mixed group was guys and gals. In my experience, it’s been women, not men who began to dislike the term gals and pushed to be referred to as guys as a gender neutral term. I have specifically run into many women who have strongly stated they should be referred to as guys, not gals.

It’s one of those damned if you do, damned if you don’t situations. No matter what term you use feminists will claim you are sexist for using it.

It usually isn't, as "guys" in that sentence has evolved beyond its original meaning but my company usually uses "hi folks" as an informal greeting which is unablw to offend anyone.

No and i think the reason is said like that is because women require more rules to be followed around them, so ''guys'' is the default relaxed informal while saying girls implies more rules to follow and be aware of.
