it's very sketchy. 1. 86 people is too small of a size which leads to massive deviation which defeats the study 2.the author even says this study is unreliable and would need more in depth research 3. the sample is heavily imbalanced

I found this article. Just skimmed it, but it brought up some good counterpoints. Mainly that the statistics were exaggerated so that any sign of sexual aggression would be considered a man willing to sexually assault a woman. Suggest reading and see if it helps!

Even if this is true, it doesn't tell us about how we should respond or what the implications are.

Two responses could be:

1) We are really not doing a good job at raising men. We should support fathers better so they can be good roles models for their sons.

2) Men are terrible people and we should take measures to protect women.

The person you are talking to is using this study to support their position, but it doesn't necessarily follow that the course of action they think it indicates is the right one.

Social sciences are not my area of expertise (I am finishing my PhD in STEM).

In terms of methodology, 73 people are not a representative sample, hence should only be a basis for further investigation and cannot be used to draw conclusions.

Secondly, the methodology fails to describe in detail the formulation of questions, thus failing to address nuances between the understanding of the question by researchers and participants. This leaves the entire study open to bias and ambiguity.

In addition I have questions about the assessment of the null hypothesis, i.e. whether or not the idea was correct in the first place. This also leads to not having an accurate baseline, ensuring the quality of the overall assessment, and a lack of a safeguard from researcher bias (a but hurt researcher will view everything as a red flag, despite it not being so.).

Lastly, I have a lot of questions about whether the current culture or zeitgeist were addressed. (this goes deep into current politics, such as the whole Afganistan thing).

TL;DR way to many holes. Probably incompetence rather than malice (being hateful).

It is always fun to parse through social science "papers". Aside from obviouse ill-defined terms, i would say the main problem is Inaccurate representation of their results. The question states what is the likelihood of forcing a woman to do something sexual that she didn't want to do. They presented the results in the form of:"would you force a woman to sexual intercorse". Which is extremely different.

The precieved meaning: First, "do something she didn't want to do", could mean anything from touching, kissing, to sex. The meaning of "force" is also not clear. Is it physical force? Or coercion? This phrasing of the question combined with it presented after the question of rape would inevitably lead some of the subject to understand it as more of manipulation, coercion or sexual assault. All is bad, of course, but this is very different from forcing sexual intercorse, which is basically rape. And shouldn't be presented as such.

The type of the question: was a likelihood form. But the results were presented in yes or no form. The conversion method was also not presented. Is anything other than extremely disagree considered as "yes"? Regardless of their cutoff, It is not clear that you can convert these two forms, due to psychological factors.This is one of the problems of talking about hypothetical situations.

For example, if you ask the average person, would you skydive or not? They would probably say "no". But if you ask: what is the likelihood that you ever skydive? They most likely wouldn't say "extremely unlikely". If you ask before that question, what would be your regrets when you are on your death bed? This would inevitably affect their answer to the skydiving question. Hypothetical questions can be easily manipulated.

Additionally, many possible sources of error were not addressed: the small size of the sample and the expected uncertainty( no estimation was even attempted), random filling( which can be corrected for by multiple forms of the same question and discarding surveys with contradicting answers), and presenting the questions in random order.

I'm sure there's a number of issues with the study but perhaps the most egregious was that the prefaced this with the statement "would you do the following, if nobody would ever know, and there would be no consequences". That's quite the caveat. It even makes it sound like there would be no negative consequences for the hypothetical victim, moral/religious consequences, or even regret. If you took that statement literally then you might as well just answer "yes" on everything.

The opening paragraph says it all. Plenty of consensual sexual activity happens that way, but if you redefine the parameters to make it what you want you can mislead people into thinking it's not actually consensual.

It is a very small sample group to make any assumptions about billions of people. If they are not sharing the content of the survey its difficult to verify what the participants are interpreting from the questions. For example there is an oft-quoted study claiming very high numbers of women self reporting rape but it turned out one of the questions was "Have you ever had sex with someone when you didn't want to" and they counted that as rape without acknowledging that someone can consent to do something even if they aren't enthusiastic about it, usually in the context of a LTR. If a seeming innocuous question like "do women make you mad sometimes" is being pegged as an indicator of misogyny then their premises and assumptions about the meanings of the responses are flawed. This is likely a loaded question fallacy (Asking a question that has an assumption built into it so that it can't be answered without appearing guilty).

Not to mention, their small sample size is being taken from a very young demographic of men with peak testosterone and a lot of angst and insecurity. Again, "30% of men.." is a very sweeping statement, when actually its ~25 young men who may have been presented loaded questions to frame them as potential rapists..

The data was not randomly collected so it is not generalizable to the population. Whoever the feminists is who gave you this bullshit article does not understand statistics.

It's a stupid study about rape fantasies. Even if true, 30% is actually very small. Same study applied to women is 62%.
