Afaik men and women are equally clever. Men are more likely to be hyper intelligent or hyper unintelligent than women, I seem to recall, so in the end the numbers balance out.

Girls do better in schools because boys are deathly afraid of being seen as a "nerd" or a "goody two shoes" who obediently does all his schoolwork. The standard of masculinity has degenerated to the point where erudition and compliance with the rules of society isn't seen as attractive anymore. A masculine man these days is a bad boy rebel.

I vividly remember having friends in high school, and we all played dumb with each other in order to cover up how smart we really were. We all knew that everyone else was doing the same thing but it was an open secret. We'd say we got a C or a B on a test when we really got an A, for example. Finals are totally private though because the class is ending and you can go full hog with showing your knowledge.

It's a stupid thing to do but we're talking about immature teenagers with surging hormones we were still learning to cope with. Of course we cared more about appearing attractive and cool to girls than the long term benefits of being well educated.

We're going to have to admit that this angle is what is really going on at some point. The alternative explanation you often hear, especially from conservatives, is "boys are more rambunctious and can't be expected to sit calmly, write neatly, etc. so school needs to cater to that instead of being more for girls". Which is just as misandrist and ironically seems to justify what this article is saying about girls being cleverer.
