I saw a post on r/TwoXChromosomes today that reminded me of a situation with my ex and... long story short, I understand the female side of this, but it often feels like a tone-deaf conversation.
Basically, what happened with me and my ex was we kinda-sorta dated for a bit, I got feelings for her and she eventually decided she wanted to be "just friends" with me.
When I asked her why she pulled back (and admitted my feelings along the way), she absolutely pressured me to stay friends with her. It was honestly one of the more miserable parts of my social life. I felt like I had to be cool with this person who essentially rejected me after I had gotten to know them pretty intimately and it was just... bad all around.
I guess I just don't understand why it's (apparently?) a somewhat common feeling among women to mourn the loss of a friend who had feelings for them that they didn't reciprocate. As a guy I feel like if someone admitted their feelings to me, I didn't reciprocate, and they bounced out of my life... that's their choice and I understand why they wouldn't want to continue being friends.
I guess I'm confused on whether or not there's increasing social pressure (or shaming?) on men for pulling back on friendships when they get unreciprocated feelings for others
