Pretty sure that this is just the algorithm....

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Google's search algorithm sucks. It just shows the most clicked results, which just ends in a positive feedback loop.

[–]OirishM 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Ehhh, I'd be careful on leaning too heavily on this.

Firstly, I'm not sure whether they are doing quote-searches or just throwing those four terms into Google in that order.

Quote-searching all four terms just returns...basically this experiment.

Splitting up 'Washington State' and 'men's equality' into individual quotesearch operators does actually seem to give some relevant results.

It's not clear to me if there is just more content on 'equality' and 'washington state' that relates to women, and it's those three terms that are picking up the same set of results, irrespective of whether the fourth term is 'women's' or 'men's'. This sort of experiment is rather meaningless without some expectation of what might otherwise show up or should show up in a discussion of men's equality vs women's equality - and it might simply be that a lot of that content hasn't been written yet.

This reminds me a bit of those tumblr cringe posts from years ago where they'd try and claim Google was sexist against women because of autocomplete suggestions. Autocomplete suggestion (and search results) are contingent on so many things - location, cookies, browser history, language, google domain - and this experiment doesn't account for any of those.

Right point, wrong way of going about proving it's an issue, I'd say.

Came here to say this. I don't think OP shows anything nefarious going on at Google, just that there are a few orders of magnitude more content on women's equality.

[–]lightning_palmleft-wing male advocate 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I agree with you. I think there's a bias in news sites and general awareness of men's issues, but I don't see why Google would take active actions to change their search algorithm. That really is a conspiracy... They have done other things like not having a doodle for men's days while having one for women's day, or underpaying their male staff (which came out after an investigation after a allegations they paid their female staff less), but that seems to be more the general political climate than anything specific about Google.

[–]OirishM 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I appreciate that a lot of people just treat google in the sense of 'I put the words in and only check the first page of results', but Google can be used in a variety of different ways besides that.

Equally, the first set of ten results with just a few terms thrown in - that's not always going to give you the sort of material you're looking for, on a whole swathe of different topics. One can argue that maybe those top ten results say something about the current set of algorithms, but that doesn't correspond to Google actively hiding content. (I would also argue that people should probably familiarise themselves with Google's search operators, check beyond the first page of results, and learn a little about how search results are influenced from user to user, before claiming that Google is conspiring to hide certain content just because it didn't instantly show up on the front page of results).

Two queries and one page of results each, as this experiment did, isn't going to tell you much about anything.

" I don't see why Google would take active actions to change their search algorithm. "

I remember few years ago a muslim imam complained why when doing a search on "jihad" the first results are from the website "jihad watch" considered hate group by SPLC and google responded and changed the algorithm.

Google do change alogorithm for ideological reasons.

[–]OirishM 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

love being downvoted for not instantly claiming this is a conspiracy

[–]Long_Cut_7015left-wing male advocate[S] 15 points16 points17 points 5 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

I don't know if this is a bias from the google algorithm, or maybe because the content on men's rights and men's equality is almost nonexistent !

[–]TheRabbitTunnel 15 points16 points17 points 5 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Its googles bias. Big tech like google, twitter, facebook, etc are really weird. Not only are they openly anti-male, they actually code their websites to hide pro-male content (as well as plenty of other content that doesnt align with their neoliberal dogma).

[–]OirishM 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Then how could I find pro male content by changing the operator minimally

[–]T0x1cL 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

use duckduckgo i guess

[–]OirishM 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I mean you can literally find pro-male content on google if you slightly change the operator used in the experiment, so how is this content being 'hidden'

[–]thetinguy 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This is the most frustrating thing about participating in subreddits like this. All of a sudden someone spouts some stupid conspiracy theory and gets upvoted, and the person explaining how he’s wrong gets downvoted. Stop believing in weird conspiracies.

[–]OirishM 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

ayup. doing a little better on this thread at least.

[–]TheRabbitTunnel -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you had a functioning pair of eyes, you could easily see that big tech has a huge political bias. Watch the JRE episode with Tim pool and twitter, he makes their bias clear and twitters only response are non-answers that sound good to someone not paying attention.

[–]thetinguy 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

did i suggest that big tech doesn't have a bias? no i didn't.

[–]Mr-Lettington 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don’t think it’s being hidden but google has been known to push things that don’t align with their agenda down the pages

[–]Old-Compote-9991left-wing male advocate 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I disagree to an extent.

Google doesn't hard code bias against men nor do they intentfully use super-biased databases tp train their algorithms (especially since the algo itself trains and retrains itself with every click on the site).

Its likely a reflection of our individual actions and how we use Google and what search results we expect when we search. Google is a reflection of us, not the other way around.

[–]TheRabbitTunnel 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Regardless of the cause, neoliberal dogma is being promoted, while contrary opinions are being censored.

[–]OirishM 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Need evidence to make that claim (again), not least given people have presented far more information as to justify why this isn't censorship.

[–]Kuato2012left-wing male advocate 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

they actually code their websites to hide pro-male content (as well as plenty of other content that doesnt align with their neoliberal dogma)

What are you basing those claims on?

[–]TheRabbitTunnel 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Use google and duckduckgo to search for things that go against neoliberal dogma. You will have very different results.

[–]Gamer_Jack_Gameson 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Ditto looking up material on domestic abuse. Searches for abuse come up with 5-10 articles on abuse from a non-gendered perspective, and 100 articles for women.

Searches for abuse with male victims gives roughly the same result.

No. Thank you for pointing her out to me.

[–]RedSandmanleft-wing male advocate 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No problem.

[–]mr554 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think this is just the algorithm. After all, the most clicked searches will be traditionally women related pages, and the word women contains the word men, which will also mess with the algorithm and the way it produces results.

[–]Singdancetypethings 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Given that the phrase "Washington State Men's Equality" appears within the phrase "Washington State Women's Equality", and given what I know about search algorithms, it returned the most clicked results (pages about women's equality) that contained the phrase you searched for.

[–]Blu3f1r3 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I believe the issue is not that pages are missing for "men's equality" but rather you're searching for the wrong term. Us men (at the statistical level) are already on the other side of the gender equality line.

The article eludes to a better term though: "men's (or male) empowerment," which has a few relevant results: - Team Up Washington, which features a program leveraging sports coaches to teach their young male athletes healthy relationship skills. - The Male Empowerment Network at Kent State University. - The Male Involvement Program from the Tacoma Urban League.

Obviously that's still not much compared to "women's equality," but we're talking about different concepts, & you'll find more discussion when not restricted to the state level.

[–]Long_Cut_7015left-wing male advocate[S] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Us men (at the statistical level) are already on the other side of the gender equality line.

If you compare between men and women in terms of education, life expectancy, child custody, prison, homelessness, sercices for sexual and domestic abuse, suicide etc ... you will find men on the lower end of the stick.

[–]Famous-Beautiful-731 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Us men (at the statistical level) are already on the other side of the gender equality line.

Do you know how many men are in prison right now? Or how many more men kill themseves per year then women? We are not past the other side of the gender equality line. If gender inequality exist in the west, it exist against men. Period. There is no gender inequality for women in the modern western world. Just pure privilege.

[–]Blu3f1r3 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It all depends on how you frame it. You're talking about byproducts of societal gender norms, something that negatively impacts both men & women. If you look at these aspects individually, the male to female ratio isn't balanced, & I would agree that...

  • Men are incarcerated at a much higher rate. But why?
  • Men are more likely to commit suicide. But why?

I posit that rigid gender norms promote a toxic form of masculinity, one in which men are put in a position to feel the weight of too many misguided responsibilities, which leads to the above disparities, & subsequently props up a patriarchal system (i.e. the opposite of gender equality).

Women have been oppressed by a society that places men at "the head," whether that be a household, organization, government, religious body, etc... Although women were been afforded more freedoms in the 20th century, the system that was built around that oppression has yet to be demolished.

tldr; if you look at individual aspects of the whole system, you will invariably find counter-examples, but as a whole women are still afforded fewer privileges than men.
